Rupert Murdoch Declines Summons To Appear for Questioning in Parliament

July 14, 2011
By

News Corporation’s Rupert and James Murdoch were summonsed to appear before Parliament’s committee to answer questions on the phone hacking scandal on Tuesday — but, Murdoch declined.

But as US citizens, Murdoch and son  James both backed out and neither can be compelled to appear. Apparently, they claim they will come another day, but what could be more important?

The hacking began with invading the privacy of celebrities then expanded, soon targeting thousands of others, including a 13 year old  girl who was kidnapped and later killed — this outraged the British public then prompted an investigation.

Meanwhile, not only the News of the World is in the midst of this scandal but three Murdoch owned newspapers. News International’s Sunday Times and The Sun(Britain’ s most read tabloid paper), allegedly used deception to try to obtain former Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s private financial records.

Rebekah Brooks, on the other hand, has agreed to attend.

60 year old Neil Wallis, former executive editor of the News of the World tabloid which is in the middle of the scandal has been arrested and taken in for questioning on suspicion of conspiring to intercept communications. Wallis is the ninth person arrested in this scandal.

BBC reports:

On Tuesday, the Commons culture, media and sport committee invited Mrs Brooks and the Murdochs to give evidence at the House of Commons about the phone-hacking scandal.

In a statement, the MPs said that serious questions had arisen about the evidence Mrs Brooks and Andy Coulson, both of them former News of the World editors, gave at a previous hearing in 2003.

Rupert Murdoch, in a letter to committee chairman, John Whittingdale,  wrote that he was not available on Tuesday but, he was “fully prepared” to give evidence to the judge-led inquiry announced by David Cameron on Wednesday.

James Murdoch offered to appear on an alternative date, the earliest of which was 10 August. What is baffling is, what other issue is more demanding in his life after thousands of people were victimized? Perhaps Murdoch is attempting to rid this problem by utilizing other avenues.

Ms Brooks said she “welcomed the opportunity” to give evidence.

But, in a statement, the MPs said: “The committee has made clear its view that all three should appear to account for the behaviour of News International and for previous statements made to the committee in Parliament, now acknowledged to be false.

“Accordingly, the committee has this morning decided to summon Rupert Murdoch and James Murdoch to appear before the Select Committee in Parliament at 2.30pm on Tuesday July 19 2011.”

Mr Whittingdale said the Deputy Serjeant at Arms of the House of Commons would now deliver the summons to the Murdochs in person.

.

Given the ire this scandal has drawn in Britain I would think Mr. Murdoch would want to clear the air. An interesting thought — since the media mogul is a U.S. citizen, and the scandal includes hacking the families of 9/11 victims, it’s most unlikely he can put off appearing here for questioning.

If you recall, this past January, Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, who was demonized by Fox News, claimed to have in his possession secret documents which are/were damaging to Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp empire. Could it be….

And then there’s Roger Ailes who in the past has been accused of manipulation.

@Abigail, I read about that a few hours after I published this – i will update it. I am sure his conscience was bothering him. (Please note heavy sarcasm). Thank you for the link.

    News Flash!

Sarah Palin is a spy. Everything about her is a compete fabrication. She was planted as McCain’s running mate to flush out those who are a part of the “New World Order.” This group consists of CEOs, wealthy elitists, and a collection of corrupt politicians with the goal of overthrowing the US government.

Obama, much like Osama, appears to be nothing more than a spokesperson for this group. Osama Obama, Biden Bin Laden, it’s a code. The feds are trying everything to contain this from leaking out. Whether you believe this or not it is honest to God’s truth. The military is using Obama as their puppet. This is also the reason why all the CEOs who ran in the last midterm didn’t get elected.

The majority of the media has been taken over by the feds in an effort to suppress this. Want proof? Didn’t you find it a bit odd that we caught Bin Laden 3 days after Trump, of all people, got Obama to release his birth certificate? Did you actually look at his birth certificate? After 3 or 4 days covering the death of Osama, a completely manufactured lie, the media moved onto 3 weeks of Anthony Weiner’s weener coverage. The Pentagon is not only controlling the news stories, they are also controlling the commenting. 90% of the comments you’re reading are manufactured garbage. This is what your tax dollars are paying for.

If you want the real story about what’s gong on in America then by all means read and share the following story before our democracy ceases to exist. The future of our country is in your hands. Are you going to do anything about it?

@aaron fleszar, You silly goose. What a troubled soul you are to compare our President to the worst terrorist America has ever known. Please, do see someone about that ‘special’ problem.

Great. I guess everything in the allegations WAS true.

So now you’re slinking off to the ‘States hoping the extradition treaties won’t find you heading back to serve a prison term in Britain.

Let’s see… Australia signed an extradition treaty as well.

How ’bout running off to anywhere else with indoor plumbing… Nope.

    There’s always Somalia… :-)

    Goodbye Rupe.

I’m so tired of journalist who use sensationalizing tactics and sly wording. If you haven’t read about this before then the following statement is SOOOOO misleading: “The hacking began with invading the privacy of celebrities then expanded, soon targeting thousands of others, including a 13 year old girl who was kidnapped and later killed — this outraged the British public then prompted an investigation”

The author is leading us to believe that the hacking led to kidnapping and murder. Really? Is that really what happened? Be clear, not sensational or inflammatory.

@Citizen Dos, That is not how that line was intended.

I am not entirely sure, but I think he is asking Britain to take away all of his holdings and tell him to shove them

I too would think that Mr. Murdoch would want to clear the air. I think he would want to get every fact that he has in his possession out in the open because not to do so puts all of his property in the UK as suspect. by staying quiet in my opinion every single thing that he owns in the United States become suspect as well. On the other hand he does have Sean Hannity which should have him indicted immediately.

What angers me is, the UK arrests these people while we let our bankers go Scott free.

@Shiva, I am sure Fox will be all over this demanding justice. (Please note the heavy sarcasm.)

    • http://jotunn.org Jotunn

@Shiva, @Anomaly100: The real issue is that people like Murdoch (who have all the money) are the people who (indirectly, and eventually) pay the investigators. He can say “no” as many times as he pleases, because in reality there’s not a damn thing the people who have no money can do about it.

      • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

@Jotunn, Let’s hope you’re wrong about that. At this point, the scandal is thickening and even a Rockefeller would have a hard time getting away with victimizing a 13 year old child. I pray you are wrong though. It would speak terribly of the Justice system.

        • http://jotunn.org Jotunn

@Anomaly100: You act like justice isn’t only applied to those of us who have to work for our money ;)

          • http://FreakOutNation.com Anomaly100

@Jotunn, You have a point. Duly noted. But, I try to be optimistic which sadly usually doesn’t work out with a positive conclusion.
