Alec Baldwin was expected to appear in the opening video for tonight’s Primetime Emmy Awards on News Corp-owned Fox, but he walked off. Balwin told a joke about News Corp’s Rupert Murdoch surrounding the News of the World phone hacking scandal. Fox cut it and Baldwin walked.
Alec Baldwin’s tweet read:
I did a short Emmy pretape a few days ago. Now they tell me NewsCorp may cut the funniest line.
Baldwin’s replacement is Star Treck veteran Leonard Nimoy who left the News Corp joke out of the skit.
Sources say that Baldwin worked with the writers who penned the script for the skit. He taped it, but after hearing that the Murdoch joke was being cut, he told the network that he prefers if the bit with him doesn’t air at all.
National Confidential reports:
Fox is claiming the joke was removed because it would show the network making light of the incident.
Since they brought it up, why isn’t Fox covering the scandal more than they are? It’s a habit they can’t seem to break. In 2007, Fox censored Sally Field’s anti-war speech at the Emmy’s:
Field then continued, “If mothers ruled the world, there would be no –” But the Fox Emmycast cut off her sound and pointed the camera away from the stage, silencing the rest of her sentence: “god-damned wars in the first place.
Fox is so driven with this tactic, they even censored Dick Cheney:
In airing Brit Hume’s interview with Vice President Dick Cheney, Fox News omitted Cheney’s comments about drinking a beer the day he shot his hunting companion. Fox News even excluded the comments from what it said was the “full interview” posted on its website.
Karl Rove’s criticism of Sarah Palin was censored which you can read in depth at Political Gates here.
Hell, they even censored Ron Paul’s straw poll results. There are scores of examples I could cite but Fox is already well known for cutting off mics as well as live broadcasting and/or talking over a speech by the President, in order to further their own agenda to tout the GOP — to achieve ‘fairness and balance’ as long as they calculate what is fair, and what is balanced, but their definition.
Mr. Baldwin, you’re better off. If you lay down with dogs, you might get fleas.
