Police Slam Supreme Court Judge Against a Wall at #OWS

New York Supreme Court Judge Karen Smith (ret) as reported here is the newest notable American whose presence at Occupy Wall Street’s demonstration resulted in police force.

To sooth the sensitivities of the people/entities opposing this new movement which is still in its genesis stage can simply deem her as a ‘dirty hippie.’

Smith expressed concern over the mistreatment of a protester which resulted in the police pushing her into a wall.

Well, I arrived about 1:30, 1:40 in the morning, got out and walked to Dey and Broadway. And the police were in full riot gear. I mean, it was a paramilitary operation if there ever was one, I mean, which sets off—here it is, 1:30 in the morning, what we call a stealth eviction, 1:30 in the morning, and they were just lined up two blocks from—on either side from the park, so that nobody could get near, this solid wall of police.

I was wearing—and I brought this—a hat, which says the “National Lawyers Guild Legal Observer.” And as you can see, in color, it’s quite bright.

I was there to take down the names of people who were arrested… As I’m standing there, some African-American woman goes up to a police officer and says, ‘I need to get in. My daughter’s there. I want to know if she’s OK.’ And he said, ‘Move on, lady.’ And they kept pushing with their sticks, pushing back. And she was crying. And all of a sudden, out of nowhere, he throws her to the ground and starts hitting her in the head,” says Smith. “I walk over, and I say, ‘Look, cuff her if she’s done something, but you don’t need to do that.’ And he said, ‘Lady, do you want to get arrested?’ And I said, ‘Do you see my hat? I’m here as a legal observer.’ He said, ‘You want to get arrested?’ And he pushed me up against the wall.

What’s disconcerting are the people justifying such behavior because they believe the protesters which are beaten down are not on ‘their team’ therefore, it’s appropriate. The only issue they are disproving is evolution — apparently it’s skipped over a few people.

From the National Lawyers Guild Guidance to Legal Observers: “Legal Observers do not intentionally become involved in the actions or intervene in any confrontations with police or others. Legal Observers strive to refrain from actions that could be construed as participating in a demonstration.”

I am not in favor of that the Police did, I just wish this lady had a camera instead of a NLG hat.

You never saw the Tea Party protesters involved in anything like this disgusting display that has been going on in the OWS protests. The “gun-packers” were within their legal rights and no one was threatened or hurt. Much more than I can say for the rapes, drugs, filth, unrest, and lawlessness that has accompanied OWS!!!! There is NOTHING “peaceful ” about the OWS movements. Except maybe for the sex in public.

Ew, who’d want to watch a bunch of old, pasty, obese teahadists having sex anyway? Besides, the tea partiers are a protected party; they’re pro-corporation and bought and paid for by the Koch Brothers, so no one’s going to touch them. OWS is trying to restore economic equality, so they’re right in the elite’s bullseye. Besides, the tealiban never stays anywhere for too long. They have to go back and lay on their couches and watch “Dances With the Stars” and eat, eat, eat.

Looking at the comments here, it seems like most of us readers are taking pre-concieved notions from this article. What about this notion: the brutality of one man against a woman merely seeking her daughter, justified only by a uniform, and so indifferent to humanity that no shame was felt even though it was being observed by a supreme court judge. Something horrible is wrong with our country, and it’s much worse than deficits, taxes and republicans.

So what if she was a judge, shouldn’t we be just as outraged if it happened to anyone else? What makes a judge any more important than anyone else? We are all humans, we should all be treated as such regardless of our former professions.

I can see how when the 1% use brute force against the 1% this could create a wrinkle for the 1%.
