Police in the Phoenix suburb of Buckeye are coming under public scrutiny after a video was posted online today showing a grandfather’s bloodied face after off duty cops working in a Walmart’s store slammed him into the cement floor.
54-year-old Jerald Allen Newman was unconscious and covered in blood.
Officers are seen in the video trying to sop up blood as outraged customers yell expletives and say, “That’s police brutality,” and “He wasn’t doing anything.” ABC15 reports, He [assistant chief of Buckeye police] did not immediately release the name of the officer, who was hired off-duty by Wal-Mart with five other officers.
According to witnesses, the man’s grandson was trampled after a crowd began tearing video game boxes apart. At that point, the grandfather allegedly put a game in his waistband in order to lift the boy out of the crowd. Police, however, state that he resisted arrest and, “Unfortunately, the suspect landed on his head.”
Walmart’s most likely own in-store video cameras and that footage should clear up the questionable components of this incident, however, the force used was enough to induce this man into unconsciousness and that sadly seems to be a sign of the times, where police are abusing their power and status which inevitably produces fear. Let’s hope that’s not the case.
