The Constitutional Amendment introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch and Senator Bernie Sanders is now on the table. One of the motivating forces behind the influx of supporters, was the Occupy movement which raged against money being funneled into politics, thus negating their voice and vote. If the Amendment passes, the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United” decision could be overturned.
Consider this a prophetic moment: the Democrats and/or Republicans opposing this Amendment, will have a short lived career in politics.
The amendment is called the “Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy”, or OCCUPIED.
A quote by Justice John Paul Stevens in his spectacular dissent to Citizens United:
Although they make enormous contributions to our society, corporations are not actually members of it. They cannot vote or run for office … the financial resources, legal structure, and instrumental orientation of corporations raise legitimate concerns about their role in the electoral process. Our lawmakers have a compelling constitutional basis, if not also a democratic duty, to take measures designed to guard against the potentially deleterious effects of corporate spending in local and national races.”
The Constitutional Amendment introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch and Senator Bernie Sanders will end corporate influence in our elections by
Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in a case called Citizens United vs. FEC.
The Saving American Democracy Amendment states that:
- Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people.
- Corporations are subject to regulation by the people.
- Corporations may not make campaign contributions or expenditures.
- Congress and states have the power to regulate campaign finances.
This is an epiphany, the moment in time where we realize that Occupy can become the cataclysmic force behind change, turning ‘We the Corporations’ into his rightful status of ‘We the People.’
Bernie Sanders’ speech
From Sanders’ petition website:
“I’m Ben, I’m a person. I’m Jerry, I’m a person. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? Not a person.”
I urge you to sign his petition here and be a part of this restoration to democracy. Together we can do anything.
