Hello Citizens United; the #Occupy Amendment is now on the Table

The Constitutional Amendment introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch and Senator Bernie Sanders is now on the table. One of the motivating forces behind the influx of supporters, was the Occupy movement which raged against money being funneled into politics, thus negating their voice and vote. If the Amendment passes, the Supreme Court’s “Citizens United” decision could be overturned.

Consider this a prophetic moment: the Democrats and/or Republicans opposing this Amendment, will have a short lived career in politics.

The amendment is called the “Outlawing Corporate Cash Undermining Public Interest in our Elections and Democracy”, or OCCUPIED.

A quote by Justice John Paul Stevens in his spectacular dissent to Citizens United:

Although they make enormous contributions to our society, corporations are not actually members of it. They cannot vote or run for office … the financial resources, legal structure, and instrumental orientation of corporations raise legitimate concerns about their role in the electoral process. Our lawmakers have a compelling constitutional basis, if not also a democratic duty, to take measures designed to guard against the potentially deleterious effects of corporate spending in local and national races.”

The Constitutional Amendment introduced by Rep. Ted Deutch and Senator Bernie Sanders will end corporate influence in our elections by

Sen. Bernie Sanders has proposed a constitutional amendment that would overturn the Supreme Court decision in a case called Citizens United vs. FEC.

The Saving American Democracy Amendment states that:

  • Corporations are not persons with constitutional rights equal to real people.
  • Corporations are subject to regulation by the people.
  • Corporations may not make campaign contributions or expenditures.
  • Congress and states have the power to regulate campaign finances.

This is an epiphany, the moment in time where we realize that Occupy can become the cataclysmic force behind change, turning ‘We the Corporations’ into his rightful status of ‘We the People.’

Bernie Sanders’ speech

From Sanders’ petition website:

“I’m Ben, I’m a person. I’m Jerry, I’m a person. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream? Not a person.”

I urge you to sign his petition here and be a part of this restoration to democracy.  Together we can do anything.

I love this concept. I wish the absolute best for it. I also know that politicians are lawyers and therefore capable of finding technical glitches in any bill, thus sending it to endless purgatory. I would love to be proved wrong though.

PLease run for President. Senator Sanders. We desperately need you!

    • LOL

*Sigh* —- if your views are correct, then you have no fear of the opposing view and no need to have a machine automatically keep your left wing agenda slogans at the top.

I will support this amendment, IF they add in that corporate income tax is removed. If corporations are not people, and can’t represent or manipulate politics and our country in and way, shape or form, then do not tax them like people who should get that right.

    • WELL…

Right! And while we’re at it, let’s get rid of that pesky sales tax. Food is food, not people.

Fantastic. Emphasize that only flesh and blood people can make campaign contributions (to alleviate some concerns about unions, etc). Open up the topic to debate to get the wording just right (this is a potential amendment and should be thought through thoroughly). Then pass it.

  • Markieface

WOW!! You people are ridiculous. This isn’t about an agenda. This is about overturning one of the worst Supreme Court decisions in the history of this country. To think that anybody would justify their decision to oppose this by bringing up the fact that organizations that actually fight for workers rights should be included in this amendment to try to rid our political system of some of the money that’s ruining it. Anybody who opposes this is, in my opinion, is the problem with this country and shows us that nobody actually wants to fix this country. The whole tea party movement was started because there is something wrong with our political system but they turned out to be nothing but a bunch of whiny brats who couldn’t get over the fact that our country wanted something different than a fat cat politicians watching out for their own

    • Nohopeforus

You sound even more silly than your post thinking that your political elected officials don’t have an agenda… the point of the amendment is saying that corporations are not people, because they have proven with their collective wealth to manipulate outcomes of elections in their favor. Public and Private unions do the same thing – you call it “workers right” but ask the people struggling in California having to subsidize huge pensions through taxation that they don’t get. Why? Because those very public unions donate and contribute to politicians that happen to vote in their favor 100%. It is people like you in fact that are wrong with this country. To blind to see the manipulation going on, just as long as “your side” wins then it is fair. It is moronic and arrogant, at least the people on this blog who spoke against this, said they would support it as long as it was fair on both sides, since it is obvious corporations support conservatives most of the time, as well as public unions support the liberals… gee…

      • WELL

I could go a long with including unions as not people, but there are some differences between the two that must be accounted for before I could go along with that. Lots of organizations influence our politics, so are Unions more like corporations or political organizations? I think the question here is, do we want to stop the buck at unions? It is my opinion that no campaign should be able to accept contributions from anyone or any”thing”. Of course, I admit that’s a bit extreme. Only rich guys would get into office. But maybe publicly funded campaigns are the way to go, in order to weed out as much corruption as possible (because lots be honest, it will continue to happen). If our politicians want to throw some austerity measures down on us, I say we push right back with some serious campaign austerity.

Oh? …and the unions have the same kind of money as large corporations? You don’t mind that overseas money and corporations BUY our elections?
