Mayor Bloomberg to donate $250,000 to Planned Parenthood, “Politics have no place in health care”

After the controversy surrounding the Susan G Komen foundation’s decision to cease funding for Planned Parenthood, Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (NY-I), responded with a $250,000 donation stating that ‘politics have no place in health care.” In fact, tons of donations are pouring in, almost the equivalent of what Komen has defunded the organization.

Mr. Bloomberg, a billionaire with a long-term interest in public health, said he would give Planned Parenthood Federation of America a $250,000 matching gift — he will donate $1 for every new dollar Planned Parenthood raises up to $250,000.

“Politics have no place in health care,” he said in a statement. “Breast cancer screening saves lives and hundreds of thousands of women rely on Planned Parenthood for access to care. We should be helping women access that care, not placing barriers in their way.”

More donations are pouring in after the sudden halt to the Foundation’s $680,000 funding. The Washington Post reports, ‘The organization had raised more than $400,000 from more than 6,000 online donors as of Wednesday afternoon, compared with the 100 to 200 donations it receives on an average day, said Tait Sye, a spokesman for the Planned Parenthood Federation of America. He said donations were still coming in. And to add to that, Mayor Bloomberg’s hefty donation.

PP does a lot of good work for women’s healthcare, however they also support abortions… I believe that abortions are sometimes necessary for the mother’s health, however not always; sometimes abortions are performed for non-health reasons. Add to this the debate whether a fetus is a person or not; those that think a fetus is a person believes that abortion infringes on that fetus’s right to life. The right to life is one of the truths in our Constitution, so I guess I can see how it can be a political issue and maybe not as black and white as Mayor Bloomberg and others paint it.

PP is one of the only health care clinics that give everyone, no matter what race, or religion, good health care. They are specifically for women and concentrate on prevention and treatment. Birth control and prenatal care are also a very large part of their services. Cancer screening, and all forms of preventive testing are available for any economic situation. We can not lose such an important part of womens right’s just because political pressure is being placed on a organization. The people who deny women these services should be treated the same. This is the safety net that Mitt is talking about and they, including himself, are trying to take it away in the name of religion and God. God does not want poor women to suffer. That is the work of a devil. Not a deity
