Republicans again show their intolerance of the gay community by attacking Dan Savage

In a blog post on Sunday, Columnist and gay rights activist Dan Savage wrote that his remarks at a conference for the Journalism Education Association were “being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue.” And so, the right wing media is in an uproar because Savage denounced their version of the Bible which contains the GOP Jesus. We all know that politicizing Jesus is not the ‘Christian’ thing to do. Breaking: Senator Jesus never happened.

Some people in Savage’s audience walked out when Savage called for tolerance while denouncing the right wing rhetoric of being gay is sinful – and that’s cool. It’s their option.

Savage was not promoting the hate-spin we’re typically subjected to during present times. One example out of so many, is the radio personality in Cleveland who is facing a backlash after telling a caller that he should have his gay daughter raped until she becomes straight. Dad found his daughter kissing another girl, so radio host Dominic Deiter said, “You should get one of your friends to screw your daughter straight.”

According to the incident reports (and later confirmed to us by an executive for Clear Channel, the station’s parent company), the anti-gay remark was made by Dominic Dieter, one of the “Rover’s Morning Glory” cast members.  Responding to an e-mail from a father who (for reasons unknown) wrote to the station to say that he’d happened upon his teenage daughter kissing another girl.

Instead of saving their anger for the calling of a clearly violent and vicious act against a young girl, the right wing media is in an uproar over Savage’s remarks in stating that discrimination is not just.

Savage writes:

A smart Christian friend involved politics writes: “In America today you just can’t refer, even tangentially, to someone’s religion as ‘bullshit.’ You should apologize for using that word.”

I didn’t call anyone’s religion bullshit. I did say that there is bullshit—”untrue words or ideas“—in the Bible. That is being spun as an attack on Christianity. Which is bullshhh… which is untrue. I was not attacking the faith in which I was raised. I was attacking the argument that gay people must be discriminated against—and anti-bullying programs that address anti-gay bullying should be blocked (or exceptions should be made for bullying “motivated by faith”)—because it says right there in the Bible that being gay is wrong. Yet the same people who make that claim choose to ignore what the Bible has to say about a great deal else. I did not attack Christianity. I attacked hypocrisy. My remarks can only be read as an attack on all Christians if you believe that all Christians are hypocrites. Which I don’t believe.

Savage is absolutely correct is saying that some verses in the Bible do not apply to the present time. It’s not as if the Bible contains anything crazy, right?…..

Apparently, it takes balls to get into heaven.

Deuteronomy 23:1

No one whose testicles are crushed or whose male organ is cut off shall enter the assembly of the Lord.

Isaiah 14:21

Make ready to slaughter his sons for the guilt of their fathers; Lest they rise and posses the earth, and fill the breadth of the world with tyrants.”

Ezekiel 9:5-6:

The LORD commands: “kill without showing pity or compassion. Slaughter old men, young men and maidens, women and children”

Psalm 137:9:

Happy shall he be, that taketh and dasheth thy little ones against the stones.

Deuteronomy 21:18-21:

“If a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, which will not obey the voice of his father, or the voice of his mother, and that, when they have chastened him, will not hearken unto them: Then shall his father and his mother lay hold on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his place; And they shall say unto the elders of his city, This our son is stubborn and rebellious, he will not obey our voice; he is a glutton, and a drunkard. And all the men of his city shall stone him with stones, that he die: so shalt thou put evil away from among you; and all Israel shall hear, and fear.”

This supposed uproar is the typical War on Religion the right wing has been promoting as a genuine threat — similar to the War on Christmas. The God I know would not deny healing a sick person because they have a preexisting condition. The God I know would not preach intolerance. The God I know would not promote corporatism over taking care of our own – but I guess I’m just an evil, liberal, Marxist, Socialist, Commie, Maoist — that’s a Christian.
