Think About it: A Candidate with a Family History of Polygamy, Blamed Single Parents for Gun Violence

During the Presidential debate Tuesday night, Mitt Romney blamed gun violence on single parents — not the War on Drugs which has failed miserably, but single Moms and Dads. That’s an easy and oversimplified statement to make coming from a man whose family’s polygamous roots are deep and include some of the most prominent families in the fledgling Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Parental figures were not lacking in Romney’s family history.

Background info:

Mitt Romney’s great-grandfather, Miles Park Romney, was a Mormon polygamist with five wives, who fled to Mexico to escape a crackdown on the practice of polygamy in the late-1800s and established a settlement there.

Faith should not be the determining factor is choosing a candidate, but lack of understanding in the real world is certainly a point to consider.

Romney “What I believe is we have to do, as the president mentioned towards the end of his remarks there, which is to make enormous efforts to enforce the gun laws that we have, and to change the culture of violence that we have.

And you ask how — how are we going to do that? And there are a number of things. He mentioned good schools. I totally agree. We were able to drive our schools to be number one in the nation in my state. And I believe if we do a better job in education, we’ll — we’ll give people the — the hope and opportunity they deserve and perhaps less violence from that. But let me mention another thing. And that is parents. We need moms and dads, helping to raise kids. Wherever possible the — the benefit of having two parents in the home, and that’s not always possible. A lot of great single moms, single dads. But gosh to tell our kids that before they have babies, they ought to think about getting married to someone, that’s a great idea.

Because if there’s a two parent family, the prospect of living in poverty goes down dramatically. The opportunities that the child will — will be able to achieve increase dramatically. So we can make changes in the way our culture works to help bring people away from violence and give them opportunity, and bring them in the American system.”

(my bold)

Romney who is backed by the NRA, is deflecting from the issue in a cowardly manner, afraid to lose support from right wing gun toters who still believe that, ‘Obama is gonna get our guns!’ And yet, four years later, their guns are safe and sound, but guns and ammo sales have skyrocketed due to their unwarranted, but fear-driven partisan views.

These are modern times, not decades ago when single mothers were frowned upon and thought of as ‘easy.’ Being a ‘divorced woman’ years ago, had certain connotations that came with that moniker. Today, single Dads are not uncommon.  Women are no longer automatically granted full custody of children in a divorce. I was raised in a single parent household and haven’t capped anyone, or even robbed a bank — I leave the latter to the banksters. Get used to single parents Mr. Romney — it’s 2012.

I think you mean “bankers” not “banksters” in the last line.
