GOP warns of a shutdown over filibuster, so do it old-school. In 2010 Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor for 8.5 hours

While Republicans are dissenting over reforming the filibuster to any degree, and in fact, warn of a shutdown, Harry Reid is considering: banning filibusters used to prevent debate from even starting and House-Senate conference committees from ever meeting. He also may make filibusters become actual filibusters — to force senators to carry out the nonstop, talkathon sessions. So, I suggest that if Bernie Sanders can use the filibuster as it is supposed to be used, then any politician arguing for retaining their right to filibuster has to have the passion and guts which Bernie Sanders displays so well — if you recall, when Sanders filibustered in 2012, he did so, for eight and a half hours — old school-style.

FYI; Technically, this wasn’t an actual filibuster, but Sanders displays exactly what a filibuster would be, so please take note, Mitch McConnell, et al.

Watch:

Independent Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont promised to “do whatever is necessary” to stop President Obama’s tentative tax cut deal with Republicans, and he kept the momentum up for 8.5 hours.

In 2010, the 71 year old senator used the filibuster to call out Republicans for their “hypocrisy” in wanting to extend tax cuts for the wealthy while complaining about the deficit.

Republicans respond to changes in the filibuster:

“I think the backlash will be severe,” Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.), the conservative firebrand, said sternly. “If you take away minority rights, which is what you’re doing because you’re an ineffective leader, you’ll destroy the place. And if you destroy the place, we’ll do what we have to do to fight back.”
“It will shut down the Senate,” the incoming Senate GOP whip, Texas Sen. John Cornyn, told POLITICO. “It’s such an abuse of power.”

Speaking of ‘abuse of power’, the obstructionists have been abusing the filibuster since Obama was elected. I’m curious, have Republicans actually met each other?

Do it old-school or not at all. Come on Republicans, you want us to go back in time. Take us back to the filibusters of times gone by, if you have it in you.

I have tremendous respect and admiration for Sen. Sanders. He is a courageous Senator, who works tirelessly on behalf of all Americans and his Country, a model for all elected legislators.
