Glenn Beck & David Barton discuss ‘history’: Armed school kids prevent school shootings

Conservative radio host Glenn Beck and David Barton discussed gun control (or lack thereof) on Tuesday. Warning: The following section of their show is akin to being sucked into a wingnut wormhole with no escape. Take a deep breath. The two suggested that armed schoolchildren would prevent further shootings.

Barton said, “The great example, in the 1850s is you have a school teacher who’s teaching. A guy… he’s out in the West…this guy from New England wants to kill him and find him. So he comes into the school with his gun to shoot the teacher, he decides not to shoot the teacher because all the kids pull their guns out and point it at him and say, ‘You kill the teacher, you die.’ He says, ‘Okay.’ The teacher lives. It’s Real simple stuff.”

So, first  Republicans discuss arming teachers. Now the elementary school kids should protect the teachers by threatening an unhinged gunman’s life. What could go wrong?

It’s weird, but I used to take my rifle into town to the central High School pretty regularly. We had a gun smith for a welding instructor in shop. He’d also teach gunsmithing. No big thing.

Teens with guns were relatively common. I don’t recall any shooting up the school or each other.

I suspect if some nut had come on campus and started killing people (gun or knife or club) the welding teacher would haul out his own gun and put a stop to it. We have become a nation of wimps and politically correct followers.

We still have 200,000,000 or so people who own guns peacefully and responsibly. What happened? Could it possibly be that some political boot lickers found another pony to ride back into office?

Everything it is totally backasswards these days.

Could it be that in addition to being drugged we have been propagadized?

Don, I’m curious, where did you get the 200 million figure for gun owners.

Is that made up or what? He must have got the 1850 reference from a movie

Sort of! He goes on to say, “that the NRA was founded in order to protect freed slaves from lynchings.” And that is patently false.

1871 if you mean when the NRA was founded. It’s on their logo.
