West Point Releases Study on the Violent Far Right, Far right Wing Sites Violently Implode

January 18, 2013

West Point released a study which was written in November by the U.S. Military Academy’s Combating Terrorism Center titled, “Challengers from the Sidelines: Understanding America’s Violent Far-Right” and the far right is upset.  It’s important to note that underneath the title it says, “The views expressed in this report are the author’s and do not necessarily reflect those of the Combating Terrorism Center, U.S. Military Academy, Department of Defense or U.S. government.” Included in the list of violent offenders are racists, anti-federalists and the anti-abortion movement (which really pisses off the far right). And to be fair, it’s not the sites that overreacted but it is their readers, although some sites are asking for a definition of ‘far right’ but the study in my opinion answers that question.

It begins:

This study provides a conceptual foundation for understanding different far-right groups and then presents the empirical analysis of violent incidents to identify those perpetrating attacks and their associated trends. Through a comprehensive look at the data, this study addresses three core questions:

(1) What are the main current characteristics of the violence produced by the far
right?

(2) What type of far-right groups are more prone than others to engage in
violence? How are characteristics of particular far-right groups correlated with their
tendency to engage in violence?

(3) What are the social and political factors associated with the level of far-right
violence? Are there political or social conditions that foster or discourage violence?

Also relevant, “It is important to note that this study concentrates on those individuals and groups who have actually perpetuated violence and is not a comprehensive analysis of the political causes with which some far-right extremists identify.”

The results are a revealing read as the author goes through many movements, encompassing racism such as with the KKK, skinheads and the Hammerskin Nation, among others. Quite a few examples are given and conclusions as to what factors play into feelings of superiority over other races, and how to resolve these issues.

The violence is concentrated in heterogeneous areas, thus supporting theoretical assumptions associating intra-community violence with community
cohesiveness and its members’ perceptions regarding community boundaries. It is therefore clear from a policy perspective that more effort is needed to create effective integration mechanisms in areas in which we see growing ethnic, religious and cultural diversity.

There is a font of information in the study but you can peruse their findings later. Let’s review how far right wingers view this information.

From Free Republic:

So, they don’t see a problem with government trending Socialist/Marxist/Communist/Fascist/Totalitarian/Tyrannical. Instead, they warn us about those who might exercise their Constitutional duty to interfere once said government goes too far.

….

Here is WHY We need AR-15’s!!

….

Make them define “Right Wing.”

…..

I think all the Army fags were recruited into this “think tank”. That way, the subversive action could be coordinated against sane, common sense Americans. Just like Hollywood.

….

How do these pinkos square their oath to the constituional Republic with this anti-American communist war propaganda nonsense?

How does West Point justify host an anti-American, anti-constitutional political communist studies division?

When the Islamic pinko is out of office, we must pursue these “military” treasonous pinkos who have snuck into West Point.

(my bold)

Let’s stop right here. How does one “square an oath”? Is this a right wing thing? And is the (likely) octogenarian Freeper really going to go after West Point? Yeah OK.

There’s a lot more on both sites, but in all honesty, those guys hurt my brain. I’ll summarize the remaining gazillion comments like this: Democrats are the threat. Obama is the Antichrist. We’re murders serving our dark overlords because: abortion. They are all perfectly sane.

Another example of WND readers getting extremely violent in their comments after being asked a reasonable question like, “You’re going to shoot us?” after one of them threatened to.

This study conflated incidents of vandalism with violent incidents, providing a handy 30% boost in its freakout value. It also leaned really quite hard, and uncritically I would add, on material from the Southern “Poverty” Law Center & Anti-Defamation League of Bnai Brith. The ontology of political deviance from SPLC & ADL is intended to promote targeting political movements roughly as pre-crime. This seems great if you think rightwingers are violent, but once such a system is in place, it is easily dialed into crushing any other orientation. Check in to SPLC critiques by Counterpunch & others on the left for more alarming features of their operation. SPLC is really more like Stratfor than most people realize. Personally I think that crimes should be prosecuted equally, detached from value judgements about ideology, and the government should be barred from targeting movements or political grains in the style which the SPLC-inspired Missouri “MIAC” fusion center attributed Bob Barr, Ron Paul bumper stickers and Zeitgeist as indicators of violence.

History does indeed repeat itself. The Tea Party is pretty much the same as the old Tory Party. These people are loyalists to corporate greed and an Oligarchical style of government!

They don’t even seem to realize that all their talk about “hunting people down” who disagree with them, citing the Bible as a basis for action, and saluting white supremacy fits in exactly with the kind of mentality the West Point study highlights.

Yes I’d say this fits right into their description, “When the Islamic pinko is out of office, we must pursue these “military” treasonous pinkos who have snuck into West Point.”

      That’s just full of crazy.

Pointing out instances of right wing violence(too numerous to mention) is my favorite way to troll right wing sites

Nov had a couple of lists that he used to use on Digg and various sites. I should have bookmarked it. Sources always cause an implosion on their sites.

Take a look at the people arrested planning mayhem in this country. With the exception of a tiny period of SLA and one or two instances of the Weather Underground, most have been RW freaks losing their freak flag on their idiocy . More recently, from drunken methed out RWNJs planning to kill Obama at the 2008 convention to the increase in threats to Obama (400% over any other president in history) – and Obama ain’t no liberal. He’s as conservative as Reagan (which in and of itself should raise the ire of most liberals and should make him the “lovechild” of the deification of Reagan crowd) .
        Even back to Clinton when the GOP flag waiver tried to hijack a plane in an attempt to go after Clinton. MLK killed by a RW nutjob;
RW Nationalism mixed with hubris turns into OKC,
