Students in a Georgia High School have two separate proms; one for whites, the other for students of color

Students at Wilcox County High School in  Georgia have two separate proms– one for whites, the other for students of color and yes, it’s 2013. Some students defied the prom’s rules last year, but the police turned away a biracial student who tried to attend the “white” prom.

Watch courtesy of WCNC:

One student said, “We are all friends; that’s just kind of not right that we can’t go to prom together.”

Another student weighed in, “’We need to stick with the tradition, this is a traditional thing. We don’t need to change’ and stuff like. I’m like, ‘but why?’ No one can answer my question. Exactly, they think that nothing’s broken so why fix it.”

WCNC reports, The school offered a resolution: to permit an integrated prom but says it will still have the segregated proms. The senior class is raising money to pay for the integrated dance.”

What does that say about our society when the kids are so embarrassed over the school’s archaic tradition that the senior class has to raise money themselves for an integrated dance?

I can’t believe that this is happening today…and in a publically funded school???? I’d be embarrassed, too.

Those kids rock though who are trying to change the archaic traditions of their school.

  • Jim Hubbard

This is why I ask what are conservatives trying to conserve? Those who want to “stick with the tradition” for tradition’s sake will make good little obedient cogs in the machinery of a corporation, never daring to question authority and continuing blind obedience because that’s the way it’s always been done.

I can’t believe that the school board is allowing this. Where are the parents? This is not 1953.

    • Sally

I’m sure it’s ‘the parents’ who are behind this. The kids know each other, play with each other,r espect each other. The GOP is sick sick sick. In 1970, the black kids on our football team threatened to quit if a black cheerleader was not allowed on the Homecoming ballot. She was a wonderful girl with lots of friends. You should have heard the complaining and whining from our white School Board. The girl’s name was on the ballot and she won. We all won that day, but I will never forget the weeks leading up to it, when tension at that little high school was thick. See, our mighty football team would have been nothing without those athletes. And we couldn’t have our winning tradition messed up by a few of ‘those kids.’ It was sick then, and it’s sick now. Shame on you, Georgia.

The students can solve the problem themselves by attending the prom of “color” exclusively …

    • Anomaly 100

But the cops stopped one student from doing so.

      • TurboKitty

New solution … have their own or attend none … the money they make off the prom tickets is going to support something … return the tickets, demand their money back, hold their own or do something different for prom that’s all inclusive …

        • Anomaly 100

That’s the ticket. I read something earlier this morning and the kids are raising money for their own integrated prom. I’m interested if there are some kids who want a segregated prom. I’m curious because before yesterday I actually thought it was 2013. Silly Anomaly!

          • TurboKitty

I’m pretty sure it’s the 21st century regardless of those who’d like to believe otherwise … I’m also pretty sure that the apple never falls far from the tree where those “other” students are concerned …

Ok people what the media is not telling you is these proms are actually private parties sponsored by the parents and community, so quit bashing the school they have nothing to do with this.

    • Anomaly 100

IF that’s true then the community needs to wake the fuck up.
