Students at Wilcox County High School in Georgia have two separate proms– one for whites, the other for students of color and yes, it’s 2013. Some students defied the prom’s rules last year, but the police turned away a biracial student who tried to attend the “white” prom.

One student said, “We are all friends; that’s just kind of not right that we can’t go to prom together.”
Another student weighed in, “’We need to stick with the tradition, this is a traditional thing. We don’t need to change’ and stuff like. I’m like, ‘but why?’ No one can answer my question. Exactly, they think that nothing’s broken so why fix it.”
WCNC reports, The school offered a resolution: to permit an integrated prom but says it will still have the segregated proms. The senior class is raising money to pay for the integrated dance.”
What does that say about our society when the kids are so embarrassed over the school’s archaic tradition that the senior class has to raise money themselves for an integrated dance?
