Today's Right Wing Upset: Obama abusing Government power by daring to use an umbrella in the rain

It must be a slow news day for the right wing media, especially after President Obama shut down a couple of conspiracy theories, or at least somewhat. So, Drudge Report, Twitchy and the Weekly Standard have stumbled on to Obama’s next dastardly deed. President Obama (wait for it) uses an umbrella when it rains. That rat bastard! Obama acts like he’s the President or something.

Umbrella

Why the uproar? President Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan held a joint press conference, and when the rain started coming down, Obama signaled for umbrellas for the PM and himself. Obummer could have left the PM shivering in the rain, in which case, that would go down even worse.

Drugde cut the picture to only show Obama.

Tweets poured in.

Mr. Man on Twitter needs to see the video again to understand the joke, aside from the fact that a Prime Minister was beside the President.

How Umbrella-gate began:

Obama is the first President to use an umbrella, except for all the other ones.

Sometimes it’s better to ask for an umbrella.

Last two images shamelessly stolen from Andrew Kaczynski’s timeline. He has quite a few more.

* Title 10 of the U.S. Code, states that members of the Marine Corps shall “perform such other duties as the President may direct.”

* The same umbrella rules hold true for the Army, Navy and Air Force, all service members.

* Capt. Eric Flanagan, a Marines spokesman. A request [ umbrella ] from the president to a Marine who serves at the White House, however, would be an “extenuating circumstance”

  • That Guy

Umbrellas are nothing but instruments for a socialist takeover.

  • RJ

There is a difference between a White House butler holding an umbrella as it is for Reagan and a Marine

    • That Guy

“Regulations prohibit Marines from using umbrellas while in uniform. One reason: it makes it hard to salute.

According to Marine Corps spokesman Capt. Greg Wolf, the sight of uniformed Marines holding umbrellas is “extremely rare” and only happened because the president needed it.”

And note (if you read the article) that he requested it for the Prime Minister.

You’re an idiot..Reagan defended the ,military and his ambassadors..Obama let his ambassador die at the hands of terrorists while he did nothing

        • treestar2010

True cognitive dissonance here. It is just as accurate to turn that around. Reagan “let” Marines die in a bombing. For crying out loud this brings the power of the presidency to ridiculous exaggeration. Everything that happens is something Obama let happen, well then everything that happened on 911 is something Bush let happen.

        • Sally

He did? Then how come more Marines died on Reagan’s watch?

Please tell these conservative assclowns to SHUT THE FUCK UP AND support the president,, who by the way is doing a great job of fixing the damn near death nail that goddamn Bush and Cheney left him with,, if their not going to help then shut the fuck up and get out of the way,, instead of putting their NAZI agenda ahead of our nation !!!!!!

    • kat

Liam: Sing it, brother..ever wonder if the right wing goons wonder how in the hell we look to the REST OF THE WORLD. Note to idiot GOP, there IS a “rest of the world” to deal with EVEN after crooked-as-hell Bush & Cheney tried their best to destroy much of it and alienate the rest of what was left?

Hi Liam, I see you know how to tell us to shut the fuck up, classy. Could
you go into some detail to support how the president is doing a great job of
fixing (the damn near death nail?) He is our president and should be respected,
but he must earn that. Could you also help me understand how Republicans have
NAZI agendas? When I hear NAZI, I think of gas chambers!! I thought the
Republicans stood for smaller gov’t, less taxes, personal resposibility, etc.
All of the recent news is showing how this administration is in need of
leadership and someone to really take responsibility (just saying you take
responsibility doesn’t count). Anyone in power claims not to know what is going
on! It seems most of these situations are be created by clerks goofing off!
The president has no idea, the former sec’y of state has no idea and head of the
DOJ just recuses himself and shrugs his shoulders! I want to support this
administration, but there is always so much drama that THEY create that it makes
your head spin. Spending $4 billion a day more than we have is irresponsible. I
remember obama condemning bush for spending $5 trillion in 8 years and so far he
has done the same in under 5 years!! How can we help Liam? I look forward to
      hearing from you. peace.

      • Looking for a Party

I’m with you on most of that Nancy, except the Republicans wanting smaller government. The Libertarians, with Gary Johnson are the party advocating smaller government.

        • Phil

Republicans seem to want Big Business to be the Govt…End the power that the Lobbyists wield and many problems will be resolved.
Do we need business? Of course we do. Are we “getting the business”? Of course we are.

      • mattdl

Bush was handed a balanced budget and years of projected surpluses.
Obama was handed a world economic meltdown and because of the Bush spending binge, he had few resources to work with.
Imagine, if all of these Republican idiots in congress hadn’t squandered the opportunity they were handed by giving it away in tax cuts to the wealthy, we could have actually payed down our debt and had the resources to properly respond to a national crisis. Of course, that crisis probably wouldn’t have happened at all if those chumps had done their jobs.

      • williswinning

LOL, only people who lack very basic Math skills don’t understand how Bush is responsible for almost the entirety of ALL US debt.

    • Nicholas Pagoria

i believe everyone is blowing this out of proportion and its not just republicans its democrats that dont like him, sure Bush gave us a 3-5 trillion dollar debt in 8 years but Obama did that in less time, Nixon had Watergate no deaths, Obama has Fast and Furious with hundreds dead most being Mexican citizens but still if Bush did that everyone would be wanting his head, Benghazi 4 Americans dead and sodomized while Obama watched/knew it was happening and there were American Forces that could have stopped it and the next day he went to a fundraiser now this IRS bull and like I said if it was Bush yall would have been screaming for his head. Now my view on Obama his first 4 years I was willing to give him a chance but didnt like the fact he won then he fucked up along the way and I didnt want to see him in office again.

        § There
were 12 attacks under each of the Bushes with more than 3,000 Americans killed.
Here’s the list for Bush jr.:

Bush Years there were 12 attacks with more than
3,050 deaths including more than 3,000 Americans:

2001 – World Trade Center, New York and Pentagon, DC; 3,000 Americans killed.

2002 – US Consulate in Karachi Pakistan attacked, 12 killed; 51 injured.

        2003 – International Compound, Saudi Arabia, 17 killed .

2003 – US Consulate, Karachi, Pakistan, 2 killed.

2004 – US Embassy bombed in Uzbekistan, 2 killed 9 injured.

2004 – US Consulate Saudi Arabia, 8 killed.

2006 – US Consulate, Karachi, Pakistan, 4 killed including US diplomat.

2006 – US Embassy, Syria, 1 killed and 13 wounded.

2007 – Grenade launched into the US Embassy in Athens.

2008 – US Embassy, Serbia, attacked by thousands, no one killed.

        2008 – US Consulate, Turkey, 3 killed.

2008 – US Embassy in Yemen bombed, 13 killed.

        – Under George HW Bush, there were 12 Embassy or
Consulate attacks with 60 being killed.

        • Rod Phillips

And not once did Bush blame any of those attacks on spontaneous protests due to an offensive video on youtube, he blamed them on those responsible–Islamic terrorists. Nor did he fail to respond to the attacks, he also sought to destroy the terrorists across the globe. Obama lied and blamed the attack in Benghazi on an internet video when he knew it was a preplanned terrorist attack. He FAILED to respond to the attack that took place over several hours (two of those killed died 7 hours after the attack started). He WENT TO BED while the attack was happening. And he is STILL trying to blame others for what happened. He is a disgrace, and anyone who defends him is disgraceful.

          • Sally

President OBama NEVER once even mentioned that video. He immediately called the attacks terrorist. You are the disgrace. You don’t bother to find out facts, just accept the GOP lies. And BUSH, defended Islamists…he said to not blame Islam. Or did you forget that nugget? If you think the Bush administration didn’t knwo about 9-11, you are wrong. And how come Blg. 7 (the one that housed NYC intel) imploded in the late afternoon that day? It was not hit by a jet. It imploded, just like the towers. Inside job..absolutely.

          • Rod Phillips

Sally, everything you said in your ridiculous rant is so false (and easily verified to be false) that I won’t even waste time answering it. You’re are truly a stupid human.

    • cpom

Liam, I support America not the president. President Obama is not doing a great job. He abuses his power, he is arrogant and he does not keep his promises. When Obama came into office, I was hopeful for change. In fact it was a very proud day that we as Americans could look past race and elect a black president. However, he has not lived up the hype. He has ballooned the debt, lied about the events in Libya, bowed before foreign leaders, apologized numbers times for the US’s behavior and flat out isn’t a leader that we need. Good Leaders such as Clinton and Regan have a way of getting people to work together to fix a common issue. On this particular issue, I am a Marine and it is disgraceful to them. My officers would never ask a Marine to hold an umbrella for them. In fact it is against Marine Corps Regulations to carry an umbrella in uniform.

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

You know, you’d save everyone a lot of time and yourself a lot of typing if you’d just call Obama “uppity.” Quit trying to pass yourself off as anything other than a bigot.

      • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

It’s disgraceful to hold an umbrella over the head of the leader of the free world? To help the Commander in Chief?

        • http://profiles.google.com/melantha.chimera Eileen Duffy

Title 10 of the U.S. Code, states that members of the Marine Corps
shall “perform such other duties as the President may direct.”

      • Sally

So when Reagan, both Bushes, and even John McCain had MArines hold umbrellas over them…I assume you were just as outraged then? As to the rest…most of what you say is just wrong, but reasoning with the GOP is like trying to catch an oiled pig.

      • williswinning

Then you don’t know the code. Perhaps you should read Title 10 of the U.S. Code, Marines must “perform such other duties as the President may direct.” That supersedes uniform regulations.

      • jeff

CPOM you are out of place. I am also in the military. 20 yrs and 8 months. As you know it is a honor to be called on to serve in DC. Only the best of the best are chosen and it is a honor you can hold for a lifetime. For those that are quoting military regulation. All things in the military can be changed by who. By who you marine say it say it yes the president. He has the ability to change the regulation. So please do not come on here and use your little bit of knowledge on the military and try to impress others. He is not the first or the last President to use members of the military to hold a umbrella. Do not get caught up on politics we do not do that we serve and we serve proudly.

    • Shawn Cross

A very intellectual and insightful post, Liam. I don’t see how anyone could argue with your reasoning. Everything you said was so well thought out and you are so articulate. Nice use of spell-check and punctuation, too. You must have made your parents extremely proud.

The issue is not that he used an umbrella, you idiot. He demeaned U.S. Marines by having them hold the umbrellas. Hold your own damn umbrella, or use an intern. He’s a president, not a king.

    • https://twitter.com/DrMatthew Dr. Matt

      Your fake outrage is embarrassing

      • Rod Phillips

There’s nothing fake about my outrage, you jackass. I wore the uniform for 22 years.

        • will

I wore it for 25 years and you are strill an ass turd

          • Rod Phillips

IF you wore the uniform for 25 years and you were not disgusted at the site of those Marines holding those umbrellas, then you are a disgrace. And the fact that you would insult a fellow veteran because of politics is doubly disgraceful. You don’t deserve to call yourself a veteran.

          • http://www.facebook.com/larry.espeleta Larry Espeleta

Again Rod, you simpleton, I spent from 1968 to 1992 in and out of the armed services and at any point in my career I would have been proud to personally hold a presidents umbrella and just because you are a vet does not mean you can’t be a simpleton, you are loud mouth bully getting off on dissing the commander in chief. I despised Bush but while he was president I kept my mouth shut, I let my vote be my voice.

          • Rod Phillips

Yeah, I’m sure you kept your mouth shut while Bush was president. Just like the rest of you mind-numbed morons who worship Obama and allow him to get away with whatever he wants. If Bush were doing half of things Obama has done, you brainless twits would have been crying for impeachment a long time ago. You are an embarrassment.

          • ecmic

You do know there are pictures of military holding an umbrella for Bush, right? For Bush, “I’m sure you kept your mouth shut”, as you say.

          • Rod Phillips

I guarantee you Bush didn’t order anyone in the military to hold an umbrella for him, as Obama did in front of the world. The circumstances were different, I assure you. Take the time to find out. For one thing, Bush has mutual respect with members of the military. Bush wore the uniform, Obama wouldn’t be caught dead in one. Obama has nothing but contempt for everything those Marines stand for. Don’t get me wrong, of all the despicable things Obama is doing to this country, the umbrella “scandal” is pretty low on the list, but it still is a very vivid demonstration of his complete absence of respect for those who were the uniform.

          • ecmic

You guarantee? You’re familiar with the circumstances surrounding the instance of a marine holding an umbrella for Bush, then. Please share the details and source. I don’t doubt your sincerity, but you must agree that Internet guarantees aren’t really worth a damn.

Do you hold the view that it was disgraceful for a marine to hold Bush’s umbrella?

          • Rod Phillips

Do you even read the comments that you’re replying to? I already answered your question. George Bush (both of them) wore the uniform. Bush Sr. is a damn war hero, Obama is the antithesis of a war hero. The only pictures I’ve seen of someone holding an umbrella for Bush are situations where it was appropriate and probably spontaneous. What Obama did at the press conference was inappropriate and disrespectful. That is the overwhelming opinion of pretty much all of my fellow veterans that I have seen. So deal with it and move on. I’d much rather talk about his disgusting actions related to Benghazi, or his incompetent handling of this ever-growing IRS scandal. And the fact that no one in his administration is ever held accountable for their actions.

          • ecmic

First, you “guarantee” that Bush didn’t request the umbrella. Now you write it was “probably ” spontaneous. We’re now getting somewhere in light of your decreased level of assurance.
It seems your stance is, “a marine can hold an umbrella for a president, as long as the president didn’t request it and as long as the president was once in the military”. Is that accurate?

If you don’t wish to talk about this topic, you certainly aren’t forced to. but then its curious that you voluntarily choose to read articles such as this, and post comments in its comments section.

          • Rod Phillips

Are you really this stupid in real life, or is it just something you do on the internet?

          • ecmic

Aww, right when I though me and you were making a deep connection, (purely platonic, I promise… Rod ;) ) you had to go and hurt my feelings…

I was this close to inviting you over for a beer, too. I would’ve patiently listened to all your war stories, even the ones that we both secretly know are, let’s say “embellished”. I wouldnt have judged, Rod.

But now you’ve ruined it. I’m alone with all this beer but no one awesome to drink it with. Thanks a lot. I guess I AM that stupid in real life.

PS Is that your real name or just one you use for online chat and for appearances in gay porn (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)?

          • Rod Phillips

            Yeah. Ok.

    • C Ross

Rod – he asked nobody in particular for the umbrella – a good marine answered the call. Have the good sense to keep it realistic and not find a way to bash the president for “demeaning” a marine. If it were Bush, you would say that the Commander In Chief issued an order and the marine followed it. But because he is black and you don’t want him as the president, you find a way of making it derogatory!

      • Rod Phillips

He absolutely did summon the Marines, watch the video. They were obviously ordered ahead of time to be standing by with the umbrellas and were prepared and rehearsed (look at their stance while holding the umbrellas). Marines shouldn’t be demeaned by any president, regardless of party. I’m pretty sure Bush never did it, and if he did he was wrong. And you’re an idiot for suggesting that I’m complaining because Obama is “black.” That’s the typical left-wing response to any challenge, play the race card. Very stupid.

        • poisonalice

There is absolutely nothing demeaning about Marines holding an umbrella for him and his diplomatic guest. I imagine that it’s their specific duty to do so, seeing how specialized most positions in the Marine Corps are. And if you actually WATCH the video, when asking for the Marines to come in and hold umbrellas for him and his guest, he does so in a joking fashion, and asks more for his guest than for himself. And before claiming that I’m defending him and I voted for him and blah blah blah, I actually voted third party this past election.

          • Rod Phillips

You are wrong, it was demeaning.

      • http://www.facebook.com/daniel.zoller.3975 Daniel Zoller

Typical lets bring up the color of the Presidents skin and insinuate that anyone who disagrees with him is racist. That dog don’t hunt. I don’t hate Obama for his skin color. Actually I don’t hate the man at all. I don’t know him. I dislike many of his policies. That does not make me racist. I disliked some of Bush’s and Clinton’s policies as well. The mans skin color doesn’t matter to me. In fact odds are it doesn’t matter to most people. You just keep on throwing it out there to put people on the defensive. It shows who the real racists are since odds are you think others are racist 1st you must have racist tendencies you are projecting upon others.

Such sad little people you are….

        • treestar2010

If you did not hate him for his skin color, you would not bring up or pay any attention to something so petty.

      • http://www.facebook.com/fiberdoc Dan DaMann

why is it that whenever anyone disagrees with oweblamers policies, statements, actions, etc., idiots from the left start playing the race card? Is this the best you can do? EVERYONE is tired of hearing this crap. You’ve used the race card so much that it means little anymore.

      • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.baxter.944 Mitchell Baxter

C Ross, have the good sense to arm yourself with facts. Obama said “can we get some Marines with umbrellas?”

    • http://www.facebook.com/larry.espeleta Larry Espeleta

Rod, you simpleton, he IS the Commander in Chief, HE is THE Armed services boss, holding an umbrella is a hella lot better than being half a world away getting shot at because the GOP couldn’t keep their hands outta other peoples pockets.

      • Rod Phillips

You’re right, he is the Commander-in-Chief, as disgraceful as that is. NO legitimate military commander would ever have a Marine holding an umbrella for him/her. As for your last statement, your stupidity and ignorance speaks for itself.

    • Doug Muder

Umm, he’s also hosting the prime minister of Turkey. Obama should let him get wet?

      • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.baxter.944 Mitchell Baxter

The White House has a lot of civilian staffers, interns, and valets. You don’t use your Marine honor guard as butlers, unless you’re an Alinsky-trained community organizer.

        • poisonalice

Why is it that people bring up the fact that he was a community organizer (which isn’t anything to look down upon in the first place), and conveniently forget the fact that he’s also a constitutional lawyer and even taught constitutional law in a university? Out of any president we ever had, I would think he would be the least likely to take away anyone’s constitutional rights. And no, I’m not a rabid Obama lover, I’ve disagreed with a lot of things he’s done, but I also think that he’s totally unfairly being picked on, and I also think he seems like a decent person once you get beyond politics and seems like a very devoted father and husband who finds his family much more important than anything else in the world, even being president. I think that’s respectable.

      • Rod Phillips

First of all, having a press conference outside when it’s clearly getting ready to rain was stupid. Secondly, knowing it was going to rain, they could have staged the umbrellas at the podiums and they could have held their own. Or, they could have had a couple of interns standing by to hold them. Sad that he was so concerned about the Turkish PM’s suit getting wet but couldn’t care less about the Marines’ (very expensive) uniforms getting wet.

  • joecooling

Some people have respect for the President. Those that matter anyways.

  • http://twitter.com/DrZin DrZin

I believe the outrage is that he’s left two marines in their dress blues to be drenched. If he’d had Carney and Axelrod out there, I don’t think there would be much objection, only merriment.

But using Marines this way presents a terrible image and really is a pretty tone-deaf move.

    • http://www.facebook.com/zablanc John Blanco

Umm, these are Marines who’ve pledged to give their lives for this country. Who’ve been shoved face first in the mud, in hurricanes, in bootcamp. You think they can’t handle the rain?

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

Rain they can handle. But umbrellas? Apparently umbrellas make Marines die of shame, but not before their manhood shrivels up and falls off. Then this dead, genital-less Marine must be buried face down at a crossroads with a stake through his heart and a stone in his mouth to keep him from rising from the dead to vote Democrat.

        • http://www.facebook.com/fiberdoc Dan DaMann

grow some balls and make such statements to a U.S. Marine face-to-face.

      • http://twitter.com/DrZin DrZin

“. . . these are Marines [have] been shoved face first in the mud, in hurricanes, in bootcamp.”

So if the president had had this marine hold his umbrella and then made him drop down and give him 50 and then shoved his face in the mud, your answer would still be the same?

Sorry man, when you have FIGHTING men “who’ve pledged to give their lives for this country,” the president shouldn’t be treating them like a f***ing valet. Is there NO ONE ELSE in the White House who could have done that job?

    • treestar2010

Silly. They must have been the ones most conveniently there to do it. Too bad one of them didn’t object then.

    • poisonalice

Even though I don’t really agree with you about the Marines, I DO have to say thank you for giving me the mental image of Axelrod and Carney holding umbrellas over them, because you included the word “merriment”, so my mental image included them holding frilly pink parasols for them instead of plain old black umbrellas. I’m sure plenty of Americans would pay to see that,in fact…that might solve the national debt! Lets just call it a parasol tax, a one time tax, to see that happen.

    • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

Well that’s not true at all.

    • laytonian

      Cite the regulation.

      NOW.

      • Dave

Five days of silence from Mr. Curtis. Maybe he’s accidentally locked himself in the bathroom again.

  • http://boxofficeBUZ.com Ronald Nicholls

If Obama eat a beagle for breakfast I have a feeling conservatives would be yelling at him for not eating toast like a “real american”.

    • Marty Hoffmann

I would wonder why the heck he’s eating a dog.

      • http://boxofficeBUZ.com Ronald Nicholls

haha, stupid Autocorrect. Never making comments on my phone again lol.

    • http://www.facebook.com/people/Annette-Heck/1149542762 Annette Heck

Depends if it is a beagle or a bagel. Could make a difference. Not sure which is more un-American.

  • http://www.facebook.com/larry.espeleta Larry Espeleta

They are laughing at the GOP types like you, ya traitor.

  • http://www.facebook.com/dkarruda David K. Arruda

President Obama has NO RIGHT to be asking a government employee to hold an umbrella for him! This is an abuse of executive power that has gone on for WAY too long! Next thing you know, he’ll be coming with his drones and Marxist Muslim Death Brigade for your guns, bibles, inbreeding, NASCAR, pickup trucks, trailer homes and pork rinds! AMERICA IS DOOMED I SAY! REPENT! REPENT NOW AND JESUS WILL SAVE US! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!

And that, ladies and gentlemen, is how most people on the right wing of the US political spectrum sound like right about now.

    • http://www.facebook.com/dkarruda David K. Arruda

That being said, why does anyone give a shit about “Umbrellagate” to begin with? IT’S AN UMBRELLA, YOU GENETIC FUCK-UPS!

      • http://howtofaint.tumblr.com/ How to Faint

BUT MARINES DIE IF THEY HOLD UMBRELLAS AND THEN THEIR FAMILIES TURN INTO PILLARS OF SALT AND IF THEY HAVE TO HOLD AN UMBRELLA FOR A BLACK PRESIDENT THEN THE ENTIRE USMC WILL ALL TURN INTO ILLEGALS AND GO ON WELFARE OMG IT IS SO AWFUL.

Jesus, this fucking country. I actually immigrated to this fucking country. I chose to become an American citizen. I did this to myself. I feel like retreating to the mother country, violence be damned. It can’t be that bad to be kidnapped and ransomed back to my family a body part at a time, right? It has to be better than watching a bunch of bigots scramble for every petty excuse to whine about having a black man in the Oval Office.

        • http://www.facebook.com/fiberdoc Dan DaMann

you are more than welcome, even encouraged, to GTFO of my country, a$$wipe.

  • msLou

Guess the Marine pictured here is going to be court martialled for holding an umbrella over the Commander In Chief? or at least disciplined? Please explain and give evidence to support your claim.

    • Nicholas Pagoria

According to Marine Corps regulation MCO P1020.34F of the Marine Corps Uniform Regulations chapter 3, a male Marine is not allowed to carry an umbrella while in uniform. There is no provision in the Marine Corps uniform regulation guidelines that allows a male Marine to carry an umbrella.

      • http://www.facebook.com/alyson.mikul Alyson Mikul

the Marines in question are not carrying an umbrella….they are holding it for someone else…

        • marakiii

as if this is a reasonable reason for them to break dress code?

      • Sally

Except that a Presidential request supercedes the Marine Code, right…or only when it’s a Republican President doing the asking? You people are sick.

        • Rod Phillips

What’s sick is that you people would defend him no matter he does.

          • williswinning

Yes, having a marine hold is unmrella is SO BAD, unlike Bush who is wanted in every country for being a war criminal and killed millions. Good call asshat.

          • Rod Phillips

Typical idiot liberal response. What a moron you are.

      • williswinning

I guess you don’t know the difference between a uniform code which applies to carrying an umbrella for your self, and following a lawful direct order. Breaking a uniform code, which was designed to apply to the individual Marine in not “unlawful” therefore the Marine has to follow the order. Please serve next time before sounding so ignorant.

  • msLou

Having spoken with people around the world, fact is they’re not laughing at the President at all. His world wide approval rating is as high as GW Bush’s was low. Get some facts for a change.

  • http://www.facebook.com/daniel.zoller.3975 Daniel Zoller

So nobody in the WH looked at the weather report and saw chance of rain today? You move the speech indoors problem solved.

Yes umbrellas have been used for presidents before. However you don’t have marines holding them for you while you give a speech it shows a lack of respect. Find a WH staffer or something. Those marines are there to guard from attacks not from the rain.

BTW for all of you that are saying you have to respect the President. You are right we do have to respect the office of the President. However respect should go both ways.

    • poisonalice

Just so that you’re aware, weather reports are only 33% accurate, just ask anyone with any meteorological experience. Weather is more unpredictable than predictable, and can change without any notice. It’s likely that it appeared to be clearing up and like it wouldn’t rain after all, so they decided to keep the conference outside. We don’t know what was going on inside before the press conference. And I highly doubt that the freaking WEATHER, of all things, was high on the list of important things to talk about and discuss at that moment.

  • RepublicanCentral

Ummm the picture of Reagan is when he came home from the hospital after he was shot…

  • http://comgen.blogspot.com/ ComGen

I suppose….say….saluting the First Dog(s) would cause these people to explode.

    • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

  • http://spinynorman.tumblr.com Spiny Norman

You know what’s too bad? Sub-literate knuckle-draggers who can’t punctuate, capitalize, or employ the correct spellings of “it’s” or “too.” That’s what’s too bad.

    • williswinning

But they are the smart ones, LOL.

  • Holly

Seriously, do they have NOTHING else to worry about??????

  • Dejahthoris

What I’m wondering is how it’s a scandal for the IRS to take awhile to think about giving tax exempt status to tea partiers? They hate the federal govt, hate taxes, and want to secede. They hate it yet enjoy the same benefits we do, like the Dept of defense and dhs protections.. FDA, CDC, doe, etcetc. So why shouldn’t they pay taxes? Obama should have backed up the IRS on that one. He needs to stop jumping when the right wing says jump. We elected him twice for a reason. He needs to stop getting mired in all the bs they are throwing and get his mojo back!!

  • Jest

The point is, he used MARINES, not a butler or valet or someone else whose JOB it is to do such things.

Is this a big deal? Not really, except that it speaks further to his lack of respect for our Armed Service members and to the his lack of knowledge as to appropriate protocol. He is their Commander in Chief; he should have known better.

  • Michael

Here are Bush I and Bush II using umbrellas held by servicemen: http://i.imgur.com/8FSvGGg.jpg

Hmmm, inherited the 2nd WORST financial disaster in US history. Managed to turn the crash around.

Highest stock market value EVER! …. Yeah, total failure
Lower unemployment! …. Yeah, total failure
Substantially has decreased the deficit! …. Yeah, total failure
Over 300 million more Americans protected under health insurance! …. Yeah, total failure
More homes being built and sold! … Yeah, total failure
Protections for credit card users against unscrupulous practices! …. Yeah, total failure
Getting all this accomplished with the lowest level of support from the other side of any president in US history! … Yeah, total failure

Yup, you are right Todd, Obama is absolutely ruining this country.

Oh, you know, I read the papers from other countries. No other country is threatening to arrest Obama if he sets foot on their soil for war crimes. You do remember the British called Romney “MITT THE TWIT” (that was NOT a term of endearment). You should real the real papers – they are not laughing at Obama.

BTW, the “Yeah, total failure” was SARCASM!

  • Tracy Gayton

I’d heard before it was against regulations for a Marine to carry an umbrella. Is there any rational reason for such a seemingly ridiculous regulation?

    • williswinning

Marines in dress uniform are suppose to reflect the Corp. Those in charge determined that they do not want Marines carrying umbrellas. However trying to say this applies to a Marine at this post who’s probably ONLY JOB is to do this is utterly ridiculous.

  • steph

if you can ask someone who puts their life on the line to save yours everyday to hold your umbrella, while you just stand there talking, then how can you say your for helping the people.

  • http://twitter.com/WineDog WineDog

    so fucking what?

  • labman57

Having military personnel hold the umbrella for the President is hardly unprecedented, yet somehow it’s different when Obama does (fill in the blank) … and the rationale is a matter of some complexion.

  • treestar2010

It clearly was done for the visiting Prime Minister. If it hadn’t been done, the same people would be saying how rude it was to leave the PM in the rain.

    • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.baxter.944 Mitchell Baxter

It was done to demean the Marines. Get an intern or a butler to hold the umbrella, not the Marine honor guard.

      • Phil

Are you serious? Other presidents have had military personnel hold umbrellas… Get over it!

      • ecmic
      • treestar2010

There is nothing about the President that he wants to “demean” any military personnel. In fact, he’s all over praising them. Both Mrs. Obama and Mrs. Biden spend a lot of time visiting and talking up the military.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Annette-Heck/1149542762 Annette Heck

If the rest of the world is laughing at us, it is well earned by people who do not occupy the White House.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.baxter.944 Mitchell Baxter

That’s a butler, not a Marine honor guard, holding Reagan’s umbrella. What leftists are excellent at doing is reframing issues in absurd ways, then lashing out against the caricature of a strawman. The issue isn’t “umbrellas,” or “government employees holding umbrellas;” it’s Marines holding umbrellas. I know many leftists don’t understand the difference between a warrior and a valet, but there is a difference.

  • http://www.facebook.com/mitchell.baxter.944 Mitchell Baxter

And as a measure of how unchecked liberal snarkiness leads to douchebaggery, someone else is holding the umbrella for Reagan because he’d just left the hospital AFTER BEING SHOT.

11th April 1981: US President Ronald Reagan smiles and waves as he stands under an umbrella with First Lady Nancy Reagan after leaving George Washington Hospital, Washington, DC. The president recovered from an attempted assassination attempt by John Hinckley. Several secret service agents stand in the background.

  • Phil

I’m surprised he’s not being blamed for the rain…

    • poisonalice

It’s raining, the sky is literally falling! It’s all Obama’s fault! He has complete control over the weather making machine! (Okay…just as a side note, I DO believe that HAARP, which DOES exist, does a hell of a lot more than they let the public know, but that doesn’t mean I also believe that the President has control over some magical weather machine…better known as CLOUDS *giggle*)

  • Sally

Yeah, it’s too bad the stock market has doubled since 2010, the deficit is shrinking faster than ever before in history (not hanks to the GOP, who WILL take credit once they admit their main talking point is dead) jobs are coming back, housing prices are coming up, and we have health care. And the rest of the world? They adore this President. But keep cutting and pasting those Fox talking points…you earned your dollar.

  • williswinning

They are not breaking the Code. Please serve next time before sounding idiotic.

  • HD Liberty Rider

It’s just disrespectful o the Military. Find a picture of a marine holding up an umbrella for another President…Don’t waste your time…you won’t find it. You will be hard pressed to even find the Queen of England using her military to hold her umbrella. If he had used an “Aid” not a word would have been said. Of course, I don’t expect Progressive (I don’t refer to people that seek to take the rights of others as “Liberals”) to have any respect for anyone but themselves and those that run lockstep in their ideology. They call for “Death” to NRA members, “Racist” at anyone that disagrees with their view on Welfare and Public Indoctrination/Education, cuss at anyone and everyone that disagrees with them, etc. But of course; you will be hard pressed to find any Progressives that have ever Served….anyone but their own selfish needs and misguided ideology. PS – NOT the writings of a “Conservative” I actually voted for the Chicago Politician the first time around as I couldn’t stand Bush either (of course I don’t live under the blame EVERYTHING on the other guy that left 4.5 years ago paradigm)…I am a Libertarian….because “Everyone being treated equally, Government in charge of all security, No guns, Free Healthcare and Free Food” sounds way too much like a Prison to me. Wake up.

  • Dave
  • The_Truthiness

What if they are going to use an umbrella to kill someone? Is that not allowed either? I think that white folk aren’t allowed to hold umbrellas for black folk…

  • williswinning

Actually there’s many pictures of Marines hold an umbrella for a President.
