Video: 72 year-old woman aggressively arrested during Wendy Davis' filibuster because Murica

72 year-old Martha Northington was arrested in the Texas Senate gallery while participating in the protest as State Sen. Wendy Davis took part in a 13 hour filibuster. Ms. Nothington was aggressively arrested for no apparent reason, then booked at the Travis County jail, and charged with at least one felony — assaulting an officer — as well as resisting arrest, according to Burnt Orage Report

Elizabeth Willmann captured the arrest on video which shows that Ms. Northington was not resisting arrest nor assaulting an officer.

Via Burnt Orange:

State troopers were sent in by the dozens while the gallery was in uproar over what they believed was an overreach by Senators who hell bent on ending the filibuster and taking a vote before the 12am deadline.

An eyewitness in the booking room says that though she was originally charged with at least one felony, they were later reduced.

Obviously this fragile looking old lady’s brutal Hulk-like strength felt threatening to the officers from across the room.

Meanwhile, why was no one arrested after fraudulently changing the time stamp on the roll call, to make it appear as if the GOP legislator made their midnight deadline?

Shameful, disgusting….and yes, what about that time stamp thing?? hmmm..typical

    Only in Tex ass.

  • Carla

    I find this very disturbing.

  • DaddyO_969

Not just disturbing, disgusting. Assaulting an 72 year old woman is beyond the pale and smacks of Nazi tactics as does changing the date stamp ILLEGALLY in order to force their religious views on a secular world. The sooner the these people are out of office and the country is back on the correct track, the better for all of us.

It’s Texas. Not likely to change.

  • Hooty Hootowl

F da POlice! They are not here to serve and protect. Unless y’all got’s cash.

  • John

WTF….what was she doing to deserve this brutal assault, by the police, on her right to be in the gallery ?

  • SNCO

During the time of the Republic he would have quickly died for handling an old woman like that.

  • sheilabryant

Good lord, she had better be careful, they might end up executing her….just because they can. Texas, the state that touts RIGHT TO LIFE is also the state that touts the most capital punishment deaths! Go figure…

  • sheilabryant

They claim the charges were assaulting an officer and resisting arrest. But there’s no explanation as to WHY they approached her and what the arrest was for!

  • Robyn Kern

Can we find out if she needs bail money? if she is on a pension, which at 72 most older women are, we can take up a collection…..she should not be in jail…..

  • Regina Carol Moore

Things like this are happening all over this country during protests. Not just in Texas. And it’s shameful.

  • Rick MIC

Was this Police Officer fondling this 72 year old women?

  • mayhawjam

In Texas (as in many other states) the failure to comply with a lawful request of a police officer is an arrestable offense. You’ll notice the other chairs in the gallery are empty. She had already been asked repeatedly to remove herself from the area. Shouting “You’re hurting me GOD DAMNIT!” and attempting to remove herself from the grasp of the officer are considered resisting arrest. There is no age limit to those laws.

Furthermore, I’m shocked at the amount of ageism in the comments I’ve seen on this story. She’s 72, but she’s not decrepit, or poor, or in need of legal assistance, or incapable of understanding what was asked of her.

    • petebogs

      You make a wonderful sheep.

      • mscoyote

My sheep aren’t nearly as cooperative. They always resist arrest and won’t stay in the pasture.

  • Edward50

Will she be number 501 to be executed?

  • Helen Hevener

Their mother’s must be so proud that they raised hateful brutes like that!!! The one cop would rather pull her arm out of her socket than let her walk on her own. She wasnt resisting arrest- she said I will walk but he was intent on hand cuffing her- and what was the charge to begin with???
