N.C. Senate votes on strict abortion measures, tacked onto Sharia bill, late in the day without notice

The North Carolina state Senate voted tonight on a measure that would add strict restrictions on abortions. The anti-abortion measures were tacked onto a Sharia law ban and the votes came in favor of the bill at 27-14. The final vote will be tomorrow at 9:00 a.m. The measure was brought up due to another slick move by Republicans who took the measure to task during a highly unusual late-day meeting.

Hey Joe, is that some Sharia Law creeping under your desk?

Paranoid N.C. Senate worries that Sharia Law is a comin’ so they try to ban abortion.

Buck Newton (R-Wilson) said, “It just took a while for there to be a consensus of support for it within our caucus. Sometimes these things come together at the last minute.”

The bill requires abortion clinics to meet standards for licensure of ambulatory surgical centers. The bill would also require doctors to be present when women take the drug RU486, an oral drug that can terminate a pregnancy by interfering with the action of progesterone which also prevents the attachment of a fertilized ovum to the uterine wall. Again, it’s an oral drug.

WRAL reports:

Until 5:30 p.m., the measure on the committee’s calendar only reflected a bill that dealt with the family law provisions of the bill. That measure itself was controversial when it cleared the House, with opponents fearing it could interfere with recognition of U.S. law in foreign courts.

However, almost immediately, the committee took up an amendment to the bill that dealt with abortion.

“They’re doing it quietly on 4th of July weekend because they’ve seen what’s going on in Texas and know that women will turn out,” Melissa Reed, VP of Public Policy for Planned Parenthood Health Systems said, referring to the protests surrounding a similar bill in Texas. She said Planned Parenthood and other pro-choice advocates had no idea the measure would be taken up today.

Lobbyists with nonprofits that have religious or moral purposes, including the Family Policy Council, Christian Action League and N.C. Values Coalition, were in the room for the committee debate and the subsequent Senate floor debate. Senators noted that those lobbyists were given notice of the bill and its contents ahead of time.

By the fucking way, there is no Sharia Law in America, you paranoid fuckwits. I’m mad. Don’t judge me.

Not you I’m judging right now. I wasn’t sure there was anything else NC could fuck with – oh was I wrong.

These boys need to pick up their shrunken balls and go home and ask mama what she would do. Jesus would weap. Mama may kick them right where it would hurt and bring them to their senses. They really are a bunch of scaredy cats. Sneaking around after hours to get the answers to the spelling test! Our country is going to hell in a hand-basket!

I seriously believe there is nothing McCrory and his cronies won’t do.

  • KABoink_after_wingnut_hacker

What’s done in the dark eventually comes to light.
Oh, and women can vote too.

    • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

We sure do. We’ll rock that vote.

      and maybe to videotape.

If women who vote Republican don’t take their heads out of their a$$, the next thing to go will BE our right to vote.

When comes the companion bill would that would require doctors to be present when men take drugs like Viagra? That list of serious side effects should not be ignored. Men’s health matters too!

    • RobiDon

Agreed. In fact the condition for which Viagra is taken, erectile dysfunction, is closely related to heart disease. It is dangerous and short-sighted to take a drug to reverse a symptom while doing nothing to mitigate the systemic origin and major contributor to that symptom. It turns out to be true: you can’t eat your steak and get a hard-on.

Check out what the Mayo Clinic has to say about the relationship of erectile dysfunction with heart disease. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/erectile-dysfunction/HB00074

    • Sally

Agreed. Men need to be protected. Let’s close down all free health centers and make any remaining come up to being an ambulatory surgical center. Let’s forbid hospitals from accepting patients from them. Let’s make Viagra and Cialis banned medications..after all, what IS their medical purpose? There is none, and the side effects can be deadly. So let’s by all means protect the old white guys, who could use them to cheat on their marriages and contract an STD or something. Do it for the men.

Nothing like installing his own form of Sharia Law while trying to claim Muslims are trying to do it. Hypocrite, thy name is North Carolina Senate

  • juicyfruityyy

Don’t these Politicians ever read the Bills before they vote on them? Need to kick all their butts to the curve!

    • Jean-Louis DePouffe

      To the curb.

      • juicyfruityyy

        Thanks!

  • Sally

I thought RU486 was as safe as aspirin. And far safer than Viagra. Something is going to give here pretty soon, and it won’t be women’s rights. Be very careful, white males. You’re messing with a majority here.

The First Amendment of the Constitution protects against Sharia Law (as it says the state cannot establish a state religion), but then, if they actually understood that about the Constitution, they might actually have to come to terms with the fact that basing laws on Judeo-Christian morality and Biblical precedent is also unconstitutional.

    • Stephen Filyaw

It’s actually unconstitutional to legally block any religious activity as well. Pro-choicers seem to miss that aspect.

  • Jean-Louis DePouffe

It’s all about the Benjamins. This won’t change until people stop buying from anti-choice states. When hotel and other business owners are told that women’s groups and women owned or managed businesses won’t be using products and services from these states AND WHY, only then will the politicians be forced to change their ways.

  • TurboKitty

I think all men ought to be taxed over every last ejaculation that does not produce any progeny!

    • Roy Roberts

      Yeah right! Try monitoring THAT!

  • rjcarter

How could a “last minute” bill be “last minute” when WRAL reported on the thing back in March?

    http://www.wral.com/proposed-abortion-rules-could-close-nc-clinics/12227713/

    • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

Was it titled ‘Page not found’?

      • rjcarter

Hmm. Nope, it’s titled “Proposed abortion rules could close NC clinics” The link above works for me, but maybe because it’s already cached?

        • http://FreakoutNation.com Anomaly 100

Got it, thanks. Thing is, filing the bill and voting on it are two different matters. Republican Buck Newton’s words, “Sometimes these things come together at the last minute.”

  • Jennifer Souder

I take comfort in the fact that you ladies are here opposing this crap!! This is getting serious and scary people. Repubs are attaching these anti women bills to every bill they can find and at all costs. Also does anyone have a live stream of NC Capitol ??

  • Ross R Blankert

So I guess Republicans are for women to have a doctor present or nearby before she has her baby killed. Democrats want no restrictions on killing babies of any kind. You choose. I am against the murder of innocents.

    • searambler

No, you are an ass who clearly doesn’t understand the issue. No choice herE. I am against the ignorance of others.

      • Ross R Blankert

What choice does the baby have? Women should not be able to choose to kill their babies. I am very intelligent and educated. You don’t need to be to understand the butchery of abortion and the murder of innocent children. Shame on anyone who is FOR Abortion. If your mother aborted you, you would not be here.

  • Timothy Hites

If men could get pregnant you would be able to get an abortion at the barber shop.

  • searambler

A Republican two-fer: christian taliban intolerance for any other religion but theirs (even though there is no sharia law in this country anyway), and another assault on women’s vaginas. Two unconstitutional laws for the price of one! They’re getting more efficient at pissing on the Constitution down in the deep South…..

  • Arkham Allie

How exactly are pro-choicers trying to block religious activity?
