House Republican says, “I need my paycheck” during the government shutdown

An estimated 800,000 workers have been furloughed due to the government shutdown and are worried about making ends meet, meanwhile some politicians are opting to defer their paychecks. But not Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) who told a local television station that she would not be deferring her pay during the government shutdown because she said,”I need my paycheck.”

She continued, “That’s the bottom line.”

Ellmers spoke with WTVD in Raleigh, N.C., adding, “I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think that’s admirable. I’m not in that position.”

Talking Points Memo reports, “According to Ellmers’s official website, she was a registered nurse for 21 years before being elected to Congress. Her husband Brent, the website says, is a general surgeon.

Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield also told WTVD that he wouldn’t be deferring his pay. “I don’t think there should be a shutdown,” he said. “I didn’t create the shutdown.”

Well the workers certainly didn’t.

Watch:

For fuck’s sake. They should both defer their paychecks. But to say that she needs her paycheck, while dismissing the needs of 800,000 workers, is over the top.

That jewelry around your neck and in your ears says otherwise, you greedy POS INGRATE!

    • Navybrat

She looks like one of the Desperate Housewives… the Orange County ones.

  • Ray Silva

For fuck’s sake is right. How many of those House Republicans give a shit? It might be different if they knew their paychecks would stop.

    • http://www.gm-rms-cnestu310.com/ R Michael Small

No more or less than the House Dems who really care. It’s all posturing. Bend over here comes the government.

  • Diane

Just another Pub/TP pig. Her huband is a surgeon and she needs a paycheck. What a crock.

    • BanditBasheert

      No kidding –

  • tiredoftea

”I need my paycheck.” And we need congressional representatives who are capable of extending that thought to everyone who they have furloughed, federal workers, federal contractors, any and all businesses supplying products and services to federal contractors, instead of the selfish and short term behavior they are exhibiting.

But, instead we have her and her colleagues who have shut the government down “on principle” while also letting us hurtle towards a national default. We will soon be the Randian banana republic they dream of unless some adults com into the room and spank them.

Those regular federal employees still at their jobs, have to go to work ar receiving no pay for it. Historically they’ve received the pay once the votes on a budget. However, this year, they’re not sure if they be paid for this work.

      • tiredoftea

I agree. This is truly an a historic moment with an extreme right wing group in Congress that has no respect for federal workers, or any government workers, so I have little hope that they will ignore Stewie Varney’s wish.

  • Linda1961

We are going to need more guillotines.

    • BanditBasheert

      YeS!

    • Marlon Medina

And more blades for my table saw…

  • Linda1961

We need Congress Critters who do their job, instead of idiots who constantly create a series of crises to make a point.

  • mrsgunka

Sounds like she is spending beyond her needs if she can’t forgo her salary for a few days. These people are despicable! It’s OK to shut down everyone else as long as it doesn’t affect them. If our country can’t pay it’s bills, she shouldn’t either! What makes her so privileged? She’s an a$$hole. Pardon my French!

  • stephen ramsden

    Dear Reps Ellmers and Butterfield,

    F’k you.

    Signed,
    Everyone

  • mea_mark

I just wish they would “earn” their paycheck. Is that really to much to ask?

    • BanditBasheert

      evidently.

It’s why they pretend to be physicians…because there wasn’t one of those asshats who could have passed a Board exam.

      • Cosmic_Surfer

To be fair, all with the lab coats, at one time, were part of the medical community – most of them not a part for 20++ years and many, with OB/GYN after their name, supporting some of the most inane comments about women’s reproductive systems (can’t get pregnant from rape, is still my favorite)……ALL of them wealthier than 99% of the nation and not a one doing anything but extorting the nation

  • neworleans878

I’m getting mine, so screw the rest of you.

  • Cosmic_Surfer

Yes and she was part of today’s acting out moment with the Doctors of the GOP – donning lab coats and stethoscopes talking about how harry Reid, the Democrats and Obama were trying to keep kids with cancer from getting treatment as THEY shut down the government

    The sanctimonious twit

    • mrsgunka

That has to be one of the sickest things I’ve heard so far!

      • BanditBasheert

Just when you think their arrogance has reached its limits, they co-opt the medical profession…something NONE of them could ever manage to accomplish.
        Double down on douchebaggery?
GOP just keeps sinking lower than possible.

    • BanditBasheert

Oh yes that WAS so impressive. All over the country you could see physicians CRINGE.
Because they earned it and the GOP didn’t.

      Insulting? Arrogant?
I wonder where they got those fake stethoscopes?

  • mrsgunka

The GOP is the party of the monied. They are addicted to it and can’t do without more, more, more. If they had to go without a paycheck it would be like an addict going thru withdrawal. The only thing they are concerned about is their bottom line and panic if it should shrink. They don’t care how they get it, but they deserve it at any cost….our cost!

    • BanditBasheert

I think they are also horrible bullies – it’s how they get those little rocks of theirs off. Without pushing and shoving … and being arrogant dickwads .. they’ve got NOTHING.

  • Judy O

    “…let them eat cake…”

  • http://irasciblemusings.com/ Bob Cronos

Did I miss the part where 1%’ers Obama, Pelosi and Reid are deferring their paychecks? After all, they’re as responsible as anyone for this shutdown…

    • BanditBasheert

Byh Bye – you want to drink that cyanide KoolAid have at it. Please. All of you .. don’t hold back…go for it.
We are just a teeny bit smarter than you – no false equivalence here thank you.
      Spew your psychobabble.
      No one cares.

    • Navybrat

Really?? It must be nice to be delusional!

    • Cosmic_Surfer

Did you miss the part that there are actual representatives and senators who ARE giving up their paychecks

      http://www.theatlantic.com/business/archive/2013/10/which-of-congresss-richest-members-are-giving-up-their-pay-during-the-shutdown/280244/

………..on both sides of the aisle but not tea party psychopathic brats…but, hey, whatever lie to hold strongly to a false paradigm, right corporate boy?

And darlin’, since you love extortion so much (a view of corporate whoring everywhere), why don’t you donate your “salary” and profits to the 800K who are on furlough, the poor children starving due to food sources being cut off, the elderly, the infirm…or is it just better to let them die quickly in order to get rid of the excess population?

  • BanditBasheert

    Greedy bitch!
Her husband is a general surgeon – so he’s in the high to mid “hundreds” of salary range.
    Again
    Greedy bitch.

    • Navybrat

And they are probably living beyond their means to keep up with DC crowd.

  • Nik DeWitt

Vote them both out. It is time we quit accepting people like Butterfield just because they happened to get into office under the Democratic ticket. What has he done? He obviously didn’t do much to prevent the shut down either.

  • Tomi Maier

Seriously it is ok for you to STAND there and NOT FEEL any REMORSE AND OR SHAME THAT Maternal woman, infants, toddlers and children are going WITHOUT while you still receive your check! My granddaughter has to suffer because she is still on FORMULA because the MILK is TOO RICH for her, GO AHEAD AND KEEP THAT PAY CHECK BUT KEEP IN MIND WHAT YOU HAVE TAKEN AWAY FROM! My granddaughter is a little over a year old. My daughter and son in law are not able to afford the formula she needs. SO while your are sitting down to your breakfast, lunch and supper with YOUR FAMILY enjoying what you have and can afford think of the ONES LESS FORTUNATE THAN YOU!! YOU ALL HAVE GONE TOO FAR THIS TIME TO TAKE AWAY FROM THE MATERNAL, INFANTS, TODDLERS AND CHILDREN! You should be ASHAMED of YOUR SELF!!!

    • judyt00

why are you not helping them then?

      • Tomi Maier

Do you know how much a can of formula costs? I am on a limited income and I can only help with what I can for them when I do have it.

  • paulmckc

Pretty sure she doesn’t have to worry about the electricity being shut off…

  • chrisclement

“I need my paycheck, but let them eat cake.”

  • Ms Myriad

    >:( This is my angry face. I am not the only one wearing it today. ANY OTHER JOB fired employees and replaces them if they decide to stop doing the work for which they were hired.

  • judyt00

yes, I do. I donate formula to the food bank regularly. perhaps you should consider not buying take out once in a while and buying formula instead

    • Tomi Maier

I do not buy take out thank you.I think you missed the part that I am on a limited income and that I can only help with what I can for them when I do have it and that is including with my food stamps. For you to assume that I buy take out for myself is really insulting when you do not know the circumstances I am under. There is a saying ” Don’t judge me till you walk a mile in my shoes or live a day in my life.”
