8 Things You Can Do To Celebrate Earth Day 2014

8 Things You Can Do To Celebrate Earth Day 2014! (via Honey Colony)

By Maryam Henein, HoneyColony Prior to 1970, there were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.  In the spring of 1970, Senator Gaylord Nelson created Earth Day as a way to call attention to the importance of protecting our…

    Compost: Leftovers. Leaves. Dead girlfriends.

In a world where three girlfriends every day are murdered, this is not funny.

In a world where the founder of Earth Day did precisely that, it’s a reminder.

Did you know? Clean aluminum cat food cans (e.g. Little Friskies) can be recycled along with aluminum beverage cans. My local scrap yard pays 55 cents per pound for both.

Driving around aimlessly in a V-8 engined ’69 Pony car didn’t make the list, damn!!

There’s a famous guitarist (not famous enough for me to remember his name) who proposed that the fastest way to alternative energy was to get everyone to use up as much fossil fuel as they could, as quickly as they could. So… by that standard, you should definitely be on the list!

        Merle Haggard?

        • http://www.the-trades.com rjcarter

Surprisingly no, it wasn’t a country singer. I want to say Todd Rundgren.

          • tiredoftea

            But, definitely not Ted Nugent?

          • http://www.the-trades.com rjcarter

No, no, it was a sane rock guitarist.

(…in the relative sense of the word…)

          • tiredoftea

            Now, there’s an expansive definition!

          • http://www.the-trades.com rjcarter

I actually got to talk to Ted. What he said in my interview got more traffic on HuffPo than my actual published interview did.

          • tiredoftea

By their cherry picking the more unsavory quotes?

          • http://www.the-trades.com rjcarter

Oh, I didn’t care that they did that. They even linked back to the original article. But the traffic on my article showed hardly anyone reading the HuffPo piece was following back to read the entire thing. In essence, Huffpo wrote an article about an article — a meta-article, if you will — and had a built in audience larger than mine. Which is fine. I just like to bitch about things like that (in case nobody noticed). :)

          • tiredoftea

Oh, that’s interesting. Helped your page views a bit, no?

          • http://www.the-trades.com rjcarter

Only a tad. Not as much as you might expect from a link off such a high-trafficked site.

          • tiredoftea

Yeah, I guess with all the Google changes, that doesn’t count for much anymore. Any PR increases for your site from their inbound link? HuffPo has to have a great PR.

That’s interesting! More link juice from Anomaly, don’t let her know!

BTW, nice layout on your site!

I just enjoy the irony of Balboa Park here being overwhelmed on Earth Day by all the people who drove to it!

        • http://www.thecosmicsurfer-rantingsofamadwoman.com/ Cosmic_Surfer

I walked to it a couple of times but that was when I lived at 2nd and Laurel

          • tiredoftea

I just stay away. It’s really just a poorly laid out street fair now.

          • http://www.thecosmicsurfer-rantingsofamadwoman.com/ Cosmic_Surfer

Ours was a bit more but then it still had the fog of 420 hanging over the park

          • tiredoftea

            Yeah, that’s gone!

          • http://www.thecosmicsurfer-rantingsofamadwoman.com/ Cosmic_Surfer

I think I should have added that I walked to mine in Denver…1.5 mi.

          • tiredoftea

            That must have been fun.

          • http://www.thecosmicsurfer-rantingsofamadwoman.com/ Cosmic_Surfer

Actually, a gorgeous day…about 70 degrees, sunny and flowers blooming.

My walks to the park are fairly frequent since 2001.. Anti-War actions (organizing, speaking, marching, phographing), anti-corporate war machine (marched to Halliburton 5 or 6 times), anti-fracking, GoldStar Mothers, CodePink, WCW, ANSWER, Occupy, DenverAnons #E5, vigils, statements and and other ebil socialist activities Even been known to sit on the steps leading to the Capitol building with a bucket of black oily sludge and a stuffed toy polar bear and/or dolphin sinking in the middle or with my favorite sign
