An 11-year-old Tennessee boy used his father’s shotgun and killed the 8-year-old girl who lived next door.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office was called around 7:30 Saturday night on a report of a shooting, according to WBIR.
Deputies found the girl on the ground with a gunshot wound to the chest. She was transported to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead.
Sheriff Bud McCoig said that the victim’s next-door neighbor, a 5th grader at White Pine Elementary School, used his father’s shotgun to shoot and kill the girl from inside his house.
The victim, who neighbors identified as Maykayla Dyer, was in 3rd grade at the same school.
No details were released as to the motive.
The boy, whose name was not released, was charged with first degree murder in juvenile court and remains in custody.
Sheriff McCoig said kids in the neighborhood all know each other and play together.
He said the community is getting through it “by the grace of God.”
Officials recovered a 12 gauge shotgun and a BB pistol.
We’re wondering why the boy’s father isn’t charged after allowing his child to have access to a deadly weapon which was used to kill a child.
It’s relatively inexpensive to purchase a gun safe. It’s impossible to get Makayla’s life back though.
It’s been a banner year for the NRA.
