A Texas man accidentally shot himself in the foot while in church on Wednesday evening, according to the Longview News-Journal. No other parishioners at the Davis Street Baptist Church in Sulphur Springs were injured during what the police determined to be an ‘accidental’ shooting.
Authorities said at about 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, police officers responded to a shooting at the church. Officers found that an individual, who was not identified, had accidentally discharged his pistol and shot himself in the foot.
The victim suffered a minor wound. Police said the shooting happened in the church’s family life center.
On the church’s Facebook page, a post confirms that a man with a concealed carry license shot himself in the foot.
As you may have already known, one of our concealed handgun licensed carriers accidentally discharged his gun last night in our Family Life Center. The bullet pierced his foot and nothing else. He was taken to the Emergency Room where he was treated and sent home. Thankfully, no one else was injured. Please know that safety is our number one priority and we have your best interests in mind. Monty Tipps will be addressing safety concerns with our security team on Sunday morning after the service. Have a great rest of the week and we will see you at the pancake breakfast at 9:00am this Sunday.
Even though Texas’ new open carry law recently went into effect, private businesses are allowed by law to ban the open carry of firearms.
There are about 900,000 concealed handgun permit holders in Texas. The only way to prohibit guns in a place of business or church is to post signs forbidding firearms on the premises.
We’re not sure why the man was playing with his gun in church but it’s a good thing he didn’t’ take out any worshippers who were unlucky enough to be sitting next to him. Amen.
