Redding police responded after an alert that a California man (not pictured) was firing indiscriminately while making incoherent statements and yelling about President Obama. Police on the scene tried negotiating with the man who came in and out of the apartment 10 to 15 times, police said.
“The last time the subject exited the apartment, there were shots fired,” Redding police Lt. Pete Brindle Police said.
Brindle did not know if the suspect fired at police or not.
Brindley said several officers arrived at the apartment and tried to negotiate with him, the Redding Searchlight reports.
Police were unable to negotiate with the suspect. Initially, police shot beanbag rounds at the man, he said.
Witnesses who were on scene at the time later recalled to detectives that the suspect was upset about the recent legislation regarding gun laws issued by President Obama, a news release from sheriff’s Sgt. Brian Jackson said, according to the Record Searchlight.
The man was shot and killed by police officers – who were later placed on administrative leave.
According to records, the man is exactly the kind of person, with a history of felony convictions, who would be prevented from owning a firearm.
Posted to the man’s front window was a letter from the National Rifle Association.
According to the Record Searchlight, the letter requested that the resident pay for a DVD that he received titled “Combat Shooting and Home Defense Tips.”
Boxes of 9 mm pistol shells and several bullets were found on windowsills near the kitchen.
“I didn’t know what to do. He shot at a man standing in the door,” Lunsford said. “I was pleading with him, and I was crying and saying ‘you can’t be shooting at people,” one witness said.
“He was aiming at a guy and then he just got sloppy and he started shooting everywhere,” the witness added.
“We heard the five shots. Everyone was screaming,” a neighbor said..“He came out screaming ‘Obama! Obama! Obama!’ They (police) told him to come out with your hands up and he kept telling them ‘No, no, no.’”
“He did say he had a gun and he was going to shoot them,” said Dianna Hamm, another nearby neighbor.
