In one of the most powerful and dramatic moments at the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Thursday night, the grief-stricken father of a heroic Muslim-American marine killed in Iraq ripped Donald Trump another a**hole. And deservedly so, “believe me.”
Khizr Khan lost his 27-year old son, Capt. Humayun Khan of the Army, to the war in Iraq in June 2004. Captain Khan, who grew up in Maryland, was killed by a car bomb near Baquba, Iraq. Mr. Khan recounted the story of his son being killed in action by an advancing vehicle loaded with hundreds of pounds of explosives. After ordering his unit to halt, he approached the suspicious vehicle, and it exploded. Captain Khan was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart.
With his wife at his podium side, proudly wearing the Department of Defense’s Blue Star Service pin for her son, the fallen marine, Mr. Khan addressed the Republican presidential nominee directly and stared into the camera.
“Donald Trump, you’re asking Americans to trust you with their future,” said the Muslim father who emigrated from the United Arab Emirates when his son was just 2. “Let me ask you, have you even read the United States Constitution?”
Then, he pulled out a pocket edition.
“I will gladly lend you my copy,” Khan continued. “In this document, look for the words ‘liberty’ and ‘equal protection of law.'”
Mr. Khan then asked candidate Trump if he had ever visited Arlington National Cemetery.
“Go look at the graves of brave patriots who died defending United States of America,” he said. “You will see all faiths, genders and ethnicities,” said Khan. “You have sacrificed nothing and no one.”
Needless to say, it was a powerful emotional take-down of Donald Trump. And maybe the most memorable. It was definitely a moment Trump deserved, considering his numerous deferrals to get out of serving his country in Viet Nam, and the fact that his sons have never given serving their country a thought by freely enlisting.
Mr. Khan, who was responding to Trump’s inflammatory anti-Muslim rhetoric and a call to ban Muslim immigrants from entering the United States, said that were it up to Mr. Trump, his son would never have had the opportunity to serve his country.
“Hillary Clinton was right when she called my son the best of America. If it was up to Donald Trump, he never would have been in America,” he said. “Donald Trump consistently smears the character of Muslims. He disrespects other minorities, women, judges, and even his own party leadership. Donald
Trump loves to build walls and ban us from this country.”
“We cannot solve our problems by building walls. We are stronger together. We will keep getting stronger when Hillary Clinton becomes our president.”
Mr. Khan brought the DNC arena crowd to their feet denouncing Trump’s plan. His speech even impressed some Republicans. John Noonan, a former national security adviser to Jeb Bush and Mitt Romney, tweeted:
This is a powerful story and a damning indictment of Trump. Captain Khan has done a hell of a lot more for his country than Trump ever will

Okay, now guess what Fox News did when Mr. Khan began speaking. Ding ding ding. Fox immediately cut away from Mr. Khan as he began speaking and broke for commercials, which included one on Benghazi Benghazi Benghazi.
It should come as no surprise the GOP propaganda network refused to cover Mr. Khan’s speech (albeit two minutes of Mr. Khan on stage appeared in a small onscreen window as the commercials played). Doing so would have interrupted the network’s regularly scheduled programming of their candidate’s three favorite words: radical Muslim terrorism.
In my opinion, Fox News did a disservice to its viewers by not covering this honest, heartfelt story of American heroism. But who am I to tell Fox to cover the truth?
