The man Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz beat by more thirteen points in the 2016 primary race for Florida’s 23rd congressional district wants a rematch.
Last night, Tim Canova told the Broward County Democratic progressive caucus that he intends to run against the incumbent again. Ms. Wasserman Schultz was reelected despite being incredibly unpopular with progressive Democrats nationwide over her poor leadership of the DNC.
That wind won’t be in Canova’s sails this time around, but he’s convinced that he can win a replay race because he has so much experience running in the 23rd District now. See how that works?
“I had a been candidate for less eight months — three months before we did a poll that showed me down by something like 60 points. It was a remarkable achievement to come as close as we did,” Canova said.
Then Amy Sherman of the Miami Herald asked the challenger about his January Facebook post dabbling in Seth Rich conspiracy theories, whereupon the would-be congressman reminded everyone why he actually lost the race.
“Do you think [Seth Rich] was killed because of the DNC email leaks?” she asked.
“I have no idea,” Mr. Canova replied.
Let that sink in.
Never mind that Seth Rich’s family wants everyone to stop spreading nonsense about their dead son. Never mind that it’s a fake news story that has been thoroughly debunked, embarrassed Fox News, and blown up in Sean Hannity’s face. Canova has “no idea” whether Rich is a victim of the EVIL KILLARY KKKLINTON AND DIRTY DEBBIE or not. Call it “willful uncertainty,” or perhaps motivated reasoning.
“What I said on Facebook was that folks had suggested it and we should find out what happened. It’s that simple,” Canova added. Which is bullshit, because what he actually said under a video of the crime scene was:
Seth Conrad Rich was the 27 year old data specialist at the Democratic National Committee (DNC) who may have been the Wikileaks source of the leaked DNC emails. He was gunned down, assassinated under suspicious circumstances just days after publication of those leaked emails. Wikileaks has offered a substantial reward to help in the homicide investigation, which appears to be completely dormant.
The only factual statement there is the age of the deceased. Rich had not started his new job at the DNC yet. He had no access to DNC email systems at any time. He was not “assassinated,” either, because police say his death is probably a botched robbery. The investigation is not “dormant,” it is simply hard to solve, like hundreds of other homicide cases in the District of Columbia.
Oh, and WikiLeaks is a fraud and a Kremlin propaganda partner. There’s also that.
When Ms. Sherman asked Tim Canova whether he thinks the murder was connected to the DNC, he once again replied “I have no idea.”
Let us imagine that reply to an equivalent question: Do you think he was killed by a land shark, Mr. Canova? Bigfoot? Death rays from Mars? Because “I have no idea” sounds just as ridiculous in this context. It’s a cheap, defensive cop-out.
“I wondered what the DNC under Wasserman Schultz was capable of but I don’t know,” Canova continued, digging himself deeper. Then, he applied the conspiracy theory to the Miami Herald‘s reporter just to underline how batshit insane he can be.
“That’s not the issues that I am focusing on. I know that’s the issue that Wasserman Schultz would like you to ask me, but that’s not the issue that I spoke about today.”
Political prediction is a dangerous science. But something tells me that Debbie Wasserman Schultz, who is beloved by her district in happy defiance of what the rest of us might think, will crush Tim Canova even harder this time around.
