Donald Trump Jr. has found himself at the center of an email scandal after it was revealed that (shut up, Junior, this is not ‘fake news,’ bro) before he arranged a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him damaging information about Hillary Clinton, the former reality show star’s son was informed in an email that the info was part of a Russian government effort to help his father’s campaign. The story is so YUGE that the Trump loyalist site, the Drudge Report, retweeted the New York Times report, much to the dismay of its right-wing readers.
Three people with knowledge of the situation told the Times that former British tabloid reporter Rob Goldstone sent the email to Junior.
Goldstone also helped broker the June 2016 meeting at Trump Tower which the amateur president has previously denied knowing about even though his son-in-law Jared Kushner and former campaign manager, Paul Manafort, also attended the gathering.
The New York Times reports:
In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump (Junior) acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.
Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign.
This is evidence of collusion, by the way. It’s also evidence of that karma is a thing.
But the email is likely to be of keen interest to the Justice Department and congressional investigators, who are examining whether any of President Trump’s associates colluded with the Russian government to disrupt last year’s election. American intelligence agencies have determined that the Russian government tried to sway the election in favor of Mr. Trump.
Alan Futerfas, Junior’s lawyer, said his client had done nothing wrong but pledged to work with investigators if contacted. The Trumps are making business for Lawyers Great Again. They’re all lawyering up in the face of the mounting Russia scandal.
“In my view, this is much ado about nothing. During this busy period, Robert Goldstone contacted Don Jr. in an email and suggested that people had information concerning alleged wrongdoing by Democratic Party front-runner, Hillary Clinton, in her dealings with Russia,” Futerfas told The Times in an email on Monday. “Don Jr.’s takeaway from this communication was that someone had information potentially helpful to the campaign and it was coming from someone he knew. Don Jr. had no knowledge as to what specific information, if any, would be discussed.”
Let’s look at the headline from the Drudge Report:
Remember this in the future for posterity: Junior’s lawyer thinks the email scandal is ‘much ado about nothing’ even though the younger Trump and his father stomped their little feet about Clinton’s emails, which was, ‘much ado about nothing’ and this scandal isn’t. Life is weird.
