Trump Wants A See-Through Border Wall So That People Won’t Get Hit With Flying Bags Of Heroin

A border wall you can see through?

Talking to reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday, President Donald Trump said he wants the walls of his proposed border to be crystal-clear.

Because he’s afraid someone on our side of the wall will get walloped with enormous flying bags of heroin, according to Business Insider. After you finish laughing about that, please reflect on the fact that we really do have a president who thinks things like this.

And his remarks were part of a lengthy statement he gave about the status of the wall — a promise he made that was central to his campaign. This is the first time in several months that Trump has gone into detail about the wall that would divide the U.S. and Mexico.

“One of the things with the wall is you need transparency,” he said. “You have to be able to see through it. In other words, if you can’t see through that wall — so it could be a steel wall with openings, but you have to have openings because you have to see what’s on the other side of the wall.”

I wonder how difficult it was for the reporters to stifle their laughter? They must have kept mum because Trump continued in this vein:

“And I’ll give you an example: As horrific as it sounds, when they throw the large sacks of drugs over, and if you have people on the other side of the wall, you don’t see them — they hit you on the head with 60 pounds of stuff? It’s over. As crazy as that sounds, you need transparency through that wall. But we have some incredible designs.”

Here’s his full statement:

And while Trump’s comments seem wacky, they aren’t without precedent.

Last September, Mexican authorities discovered a panel van that was modified to carry a “cannon” that may have been used to launch drugs into the U.S. Authorities concur with this and say that drug traffickers have been using cannons to launch drugs over the border since 2012, Reuters reports.

But this is a scenario that doesn’t happen frequently, Wired reports.

Chain-link fences already make up some parts of the border wall, which are mainly located in urban, well-populated areas. These are not exactly places favored by drug cartels for tossing their illegal stashes.

“Whenever cartels try to move drugs across the border, they’re going to try to do that in as remote an area as they possibly can,” said Patrick Eddington, a homeland security and civil liberties policy analyst at the Cato Institute.

So would a transparent wall keep someone walking in the boondocks from being beaned by a hurtling bag of heroin?

“When you’re talking about remote locations, cartels utilize other technologies. They utilize drug catapults and trebuchets,” noted Brandon Behlendorf, homeland security expert at the State University of New York, Albany (SUNY). “They’re launching drugs not five feet from the wall, or 10 feet from the wall, where a transparent wall would help. They’re launching it 100 feet over the wall, 150 feet over the wall. No amount of transparency is going to help you in that context.”

So chalk this up as another one of Trump’s half-witted ideas. He has more than he can spare. Maybe he’s been spending too much time listening to Alex Jones.
